In the process of living the life you envisage, meeting the expectations you have for yourself doesn't always come easily. You may not realise it, but setting such high (and sometimes impossible) expectations could be causing you unnecessary stress. Some of the biggest repercussions are dissatisfaction with your current situation, self-criticism, and a loss of mental peace, happiness, and health. Learn how to go easy on yourself, one step at a time.

1. Be grateful for the good in your life.
One of the most fundamental principles of success is learning how to be grateful for all the good in your life. Life is not perfect, and it will never be. Understanding this will allow you to focus on the positives. By focusing on what you have, you'll develop a happy and calm disposition that will enable your dreams to come true.

2. Want less.
It's easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself and what you have to others. You may find that once you get the thing you want, you no longer want it or something new and better comes along and the wanting continues. If you get caught up in this vicious cycle, you'll never be fully satisfied with yourself or your life. Re-examine your priorities. Is success, prosperity, or happiness your ultimate goal? Set clearly defined but manageable short-term and long-term goals and be persistent in your efforts to achieve them.

3. Balance yourself.
Striking a holistic balance in all aspects of your life--professional, personal, familial, and social--is vital for optimal health, well-being, and success. Resolve to keep a positive attitude. A technique that can help in this regard is autosuggestion, making use of positive affirmations on a regular basis to achieve a desired result. You can use it to remove negative behaviour or emotions like self-criticism, fear, and doubts, and build confidence and a sense of calm and happiness.

4. Forgive yourself.
In order to experience long-lasting success, remember not to take yourself too seriously or feel guilty or regretful when something doesn't work out according to your plans. Steer clear of negative emotions and move forward. Instead of brooding over what went wrong, find the solution to your problem and implement the lesson the next time around. Worrying or being hung up on your failures and setbacks will only waste your time and jeopardise your future.

5. Manage your stress.
It's important to learn how to manage the stress of everyday life. Exercise combined with a wholesome diet is a great way to keep your stress levels at a minimum. Meditation, deep breathing, and talking openly to a close family member or friend may help you find the right perspective. Motivate yourself regularly with a positive attitude and these five simple steps will open the doors to success as you define it.
