The pointer finger is the second digit and first finger of the human hand. It is also called the index finger or the forefinger. This finger often possesses the largest amount of sensitivity and greatest dexterity of any of the fingers. The index finger is composed of three bones: the distal phalanx, intermediate phalanx, and proximal phalanx. The little finger and index finger both have an extra muscle extensor, which makes these fingers most suitable for pointing. Sensations from the index finger travel through a branch of the median nerve; this nerve also provides muscle function to the finger.
