The intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve is a term for the peroneal nerve’s terminal (end) and lateral (side) branches. The peroneal nerve is also known commonly as the superficial fibular nerve. The intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve is also called the external dorsal cutaneous branch. The nerve is located near a variety of different nerves, such as the saphenous nerve, the internal and external plantar nerve’s branches, and the sural nerve.
The cutaneous nerve supplies the dorsal digital nerves of the outer three toes and the lateral dorsum, which is the surface of the outside of the foot and ankle.
The nerve travels through the dorsum’s lateral side and splits up into digital branches. The branches supply to the common borders of the third, fourth, and fifth toes.
This nerve may communicate with the sural nerve, also called the short saphenous nerve.
