It isn’t hard to find cannabidiol (CBD) products these days. This nonintoxicating compound from the cannabis plant may have some health benefits, which is why many companies are using it in their products.

The Trusted Lab is one of them. Here’s what to know about the company and their approach to quality and transparency.

The Trusted Lab is a U.S. CBD brand that makes concentrated and purified CBD products. Their products are third-party tested to ensure quality and potency. The company appears to have a generally positive reputation based on online reviews.

At this time, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate CBD products the same way it does drugs and supplements. However, it does send warning letters to CBD brands making false claims about their products. The Trusted Lab hasn’t received a warning letter — which is a good sign — nor has it been involved in any lawsuits.

Unlike some CBD companies, The Trusted Lab doesn’t grow their own hemp. However, the company claims to partner with licensed, sustainable, and organic farmers who grow industrial registered hemp, and they adhere to standards set by the Hemp Industries Association.

The Trusted Lab uses a supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction to process their products. According to the company website, their lab and production facilities follow ISO Standard 9001 and good manufacturing practices (GMP), but we couldn’t find evidence of third-party certifications.

Certificates of analysis (COAs) are readily available on The Trusted Lab website, but we found a few discrepancies. Some COAs appear to be missing from the website, including those for the Women’s Wellness Cramping Relief Oil, the CBD Gummies, and the “Me Time” Gift Set. Potency isn’t listed on all product pages or labels, such as the Intimate CBD Oil, which is also missing a COA.

Testing results come from at least three different labs and don’t appear to be batch-specific. We also noticed that some COAs are close to their expiration date or incomplete. For example, the COA for the Pain Relief Travel Salve is missing contaminant testing. Some COAs also show a potency range that varies from the label by more than 20 percent.

Finally, some of The Trusted Lab’s products are described on their website as full-spectrum products, but listed as THC-free. Full-spectrum products include small amounts of many compounds naturally occurring in the cannabis plant, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Since these products don’t contain THC, they may actually be broad-spectrum products.

Additionally, products described as broad-spectrum appear to be isolates, instead. According to the lab reports, they only contain CBD and no other cannabinoids.

The Trusted Lab offers a wide range of CBD oils, gummies, topicals, and capsules at various potencies, and pricing is competitive with other organic CBD brands. The company says it uses both full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD in their products.

While some brands offer special discounts or loyalty programs, The Trusted Lab doesn’t appear to do the same. However, they do have a subscription option for their products, which reduces the price.

Note that you must receive a predetermined number of shipments before subscriptions can be canceled. The company also offers product bundles with discounted pricing.

The Trusted Lab has a line of CBD products for dogs and cats, including treats and drops. But if you’re interested in giving CBD to your pet, know that it’s important to speak with your vet first.

All CBD products should be kept out of reach of your pets, particularly if they’re full-spectrum. THC is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. Consuming a large dosage of a potent product may be dangerous.

The Trusted Lab has reviews on their website for many of their products, and they’re overwhelmingly positive. According to the company, they’re all from verified reviewers.

While The Trusted Lab has no Better Business Bureau accreditation or reviews on third-party sites like Trustpilot, close to 90 reviews on Google give the company 4.9 out of 5 stars. Other online reviews are also generally positive, praising The Trusted Lab for their high-quality products and customer service.

The company does have a refund policy, but options are somewhat limited. You can return a product for a full refund up to 15 days from the date of purchase.

However, the product can’t be damaged or used, and it must be in the same condition as upon arrival, including in the original packaging. If these conditions aren’t met, partial refunds may be granted. Sale items are not eligible for refunds.

After 15 days, store credits are available for returns that meet the same conditions.

Important note: An update on the return policy states that due to the pandemic, returns aren’t currently being accepted.

The Trusted Lab has a lot of products, which might be overwhelming if you’re new to CBD. The company has a CBD product-finder quiz designed to help you zero in on the right product and concentration for your needs.

In general, it can be helpful to shop for CBD based on your preferred method of consumption. If you’d like a product designed for targeted relief, a topical is a good option. These products are applied directly to the skin as a spot treatment.

Edible options, like oils, gummies and softgels, will have full-body effects.

Proper usage of a CBD product will depend on what you buy.

In general, CBD tinctures and oils are taken sublingually (under the tongue) or added to food and drinks. Topicals are applied directly to the skin, and softgels and gummies are ingested.

Follow the directions on the label and avoid taking more CBD than recommended. If you need more information, this is a helpful dosage chart.

If you’re using a CBD topical product, it’s a good idea to do a small test patch first. To do this, place a small amount of product on the inside of your wrist and wait for 24 hours. If you experience any irritation, stop using the product.

While CBD is generally considered safe, some people may still experience side effects. These can include:

  • fatigue
  • diarrhea
  • changes in appetite
  • changes in weight

Speak with your doctor before trying CBD, especially if you’re currently taking any medications. CBD may interact with some medications.

Be aware of consuming CBD products by mouth when you’re also eating a high fat meal. Some research suggests that meals high in fat can dramatically increase CBD blood concentration, which means you’re at greater risk of experiencing side effects.

While The Trusted Lab appears to be committed to purity in their products, there is a lot of variety in their testing and lab results.

Reviews are generally positive, but it’s still best to choose a product that has a current, complete, and comprehensive COA.

Be sure to talk with your doctor before trying CBD.

Is CBD Legal? Hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3 percent THC) are legal on the federal level, but are still illegal under some state laws. Marijuana-derived CBD products are illegal on the federal level, but are legal under some state laws. Check your state’s laws and those of anywhere you travel. Keep in mind that nonprescription CBD products are not FDA-approved, and may be inaccurately labeled.
