Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) develops when the immune system mistakenly identifying cells in the joints as invaders, which leads to an attack, causing:
- inflammation
- pain
- tissue damage
PsA occurs in about 30 percent of people with psoriasis and is the result of more widespread autoimmune activity. This activation of the immune system results in attacks of the body’s own cells.
Treatments for PsA are based on managing pain, reducing inflammation, and preventing damage of joints by interrupting the immune response. As the disease progresses, symptoms may become more intense and require modification to your treatment plan.
This assessment can help determine if your PsA is well managed or if you may be experiencing progression of your disease.
