Treatment of Preterm Labor: Bed Rest

Medically reviewed by Alison Stuebe, Department of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MAWritten by the Healthline Editorial Team on March 15, 2012

Many mothers with complicated pregnancies are put on bedrest. The idea behind bedrest is simple: (1) keep the baby's weight off the cervix and (2) hope that this prevents contractions. It's the simplest approach to preventing preterm birth, but moms who do it will tell you it's far from easy. Interestingly, no study has been able to prove that bedrest prevents preterm delivery. If your doctor recommends bedrest, ask him or her to be specific about your limitations.
