UltradermMD is a 3-in-1, at-home microdermabrasion system created by Trophy Skin. The company claims that regular use of the system can result in smoother, softer skin. In addition to microdermabrasion, the UltradermMD kit performs other functions, such as pore extraction and kinetic treatments.

The system includes a lightweight handheld device and has a rechargeable battery. It features an LCD touchscreen, LED lights, and a magnifying mirror. It also comes with 100 replacement filters, a USB cable for charging the device, and four interchangeable tips:

  • standard diamond tip
  • extraction tip
  • large kinetic tip
  • small kinetic tip

There are also four additional tips you can purchase separately for use with the UltradermMD.

The deep exfoliation from microdermabrasion may help improve skin texture and tone, leading to softer skin and a more even complexion. You can use these tips in auto, manual, or sensitive skin modes, depending on your skin type and comfort with using the device.

The pores mode and extraction tip can be used to help unclog pores, which may also result in a smoother complexion.

The kinetic mode and tips are meant to combine vibration with a gentle vacuuming-like suction to increase circulation to the skin. Trophy Skin claims this mode may help increase smoothness and firmness of the skin, and, with regular use, may even reduce the appearance of fine lines and other signs of aging skin.

Pros

  • simple instructions and short time commitment per treatment
  • small, lightweight, and battery-operated, so it’s very it portable
  • uses a real diamond tip
  • comes with four different tips
  • five available modes provide versatility and make it easier to customize to your skin

Cons

  • higher initial investment compared to a single, in-office spa treatment
  • higher price point when compared to similar or competing products
  • filter must be replaced after each use
  • if you have sensitive skin, you’ll need to purchase a fine tip separately

UltradermMD is good for anyone with textured skin, or those who want to brighten, tone, and firm their complexion. It can be used by people with any skin type. Keep reading to see how our skin tester below used and liked the product.

As a child and throughout early adulthood, I had oily, acne-prone skin. A few years ago my skin transitioned into combination skin. I still get the occasional pimple and I’m prone to oil in the T-zone (or all over when in humid climates), but I also experience dry skin in drier climates and the winter months.

As a 39-year-old working mom with two active young children, I experience a lot of stress and little sleep, and it shows in my skin. Fine lines and a dull, tired looking complexion are my top concerns these days. I decided to try UltradermMD to see if it could help brighten up my complexion and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

UltradermMD is a skin care system you can use at home in as little as 5 minutes. You have the option of microdermabrasion, kinetic treatment, or pore extraction, all from the single device. You can also use this system if you have sensitive skin by using the sensitive mode. You may also need to purchase a sensitive tip separately if the tip that is included is too irritating for your skin.

The device comes with:

  • standard diamond tip
  • extraction tip
  • large kinetic toning tip
  • small kinetic toning tip
  • cleaning brush
  • 100 replacement filters
  • USB charging cable
  • instruction manual

Additionally, the device features include:

  • five treatment modes (auto microdermabrasion, manual microdermabrasion, sensitive microdermabrasion, pore extraction, and kinetic mode)
  • 10 suction levels
  • touchscreen navigation
  • light-up magnifying mirror

The device is also very compact, measuring 8 inches x 6 inches x 8 inches. When you open it, you’ll see two built-in storage compartments that open by pushing down on the compartment. You can use one for storing the tips and the other to store the filters and charging cable. The wand is stored around the base of the device.

As someone in a small city apartment with minimal storage, the small size was a huge plus.

While the suction for at-home devices is less than what you’d find in an in-office device, other reviewers note that the suction is better than other devices they have tried. The diamond tip is a unique feature not seen with many competing devices.

The UltradermMD is one of the more expensive at-home devices on the market. It retails for $349, but you may be able to find it at a discounted price when Trophy Skin offers sales. During the time I tested the system, it was reduced by 20-25%.

The UltradermMD is relatively easy to use. When you receive your device, begin by fully charging it. You can use the included USB cord. Once charged, the battery lasts for several weeks.

Regardless of which mode you’ll be using, wash your face before use. If you’re using microdermabrasion or the pores mode, you don’t need to do anything else. For the kinetic mode, you’ll need to also apply a serum. This helps the kinetic tip glide more easily across the face. You may purchase one from Trophy Skin, or use your own preferred serum.

Once fully charged, select your setting (auto, manual, sensitive, kinetic, or pores) and, depending on the setting, the suction level. Add the corresponding tip and then gently drag the handheld wand along your skin using short strokes.

The system arrives already configured for microdermabrasion, so if you want to try that feature out first, you won’t need to switch the tips. If you opt to try a different mode initially, you will want to change the tip.

In the auto setting for microdermabrasion, you can follow the steps displayed on the LCD screen, focusing on the areas of your face and neck as they are highlighted on the screen. A full treatment takes about 5 minutes. Once you’ve gotten used to the movements on the different areas of the face, you can try using the manual or sensitive settings. I enjoyed the ease of the auto setting, so I’ve been content sticking to that mode.

To use the pore or kinetic modes, refer to the user manual for the strokes you’ll use for the different parts of the face.

After treatment

After treatment, power off your device by holding the power button for 2-3 seconds. Remove the tip and discard the black filter that’s underneath the tip. Replace with a new filter. Rinse your face with cold water to remove any remaining debris and pat your skin dry.

Trophy Skin recommends cleaning your tips after every use, too. To do this, either gently brush them with a soft cloth or the included brush, or rinse them in warm water. You may also use a mild soap. Make sure the tips are completely dry before placing them back onto the wand.

Trophy Skin shares one clinical study funded by the company on their site. This was a small study with 22 participants between the ages of 35-55. The participants used the MicrodermMD system two to three times a week for 6 weeks. According to the results, participants believed they saw a reduction in fine lines, wrinkle depth, and tone. The study also claims that participants with moderate skin wrinkles at the start of the study saw the biggest reduction in wrinkles.

Participants claimed to also see a decrease in the appearance of their pores and an increase in skin softness.

Results were reviewed by an independent, blinded surgeon.

The MicrodermMD system uses the same microdermabrasion process as the UltradermMD. No studies on the effectiveness of the UltradermMD were shared on Trophy Skin’s website or available elsewhere online.

My review

In my 4-week trial period I noticed an overall brightening to my complexion and softer skin. I also did not develop any pimples during those 4 weeks, and I noticed a reduction in one acne scar and in the appearance of a dark spot I developed in pregnancy.

After my first use of the microdermabrasion auto mode, my skin felt softer. After the second use, I noticed that my complexion looked brighter and more even, and that my skin continued to feel softer between treatments. I was very pleased with the results from the microdermabrasion feature.

The pore mode didn’t do much for me. I didn’t notice a reduction in the appearance of my pores and they didn’t seem cleaner after use. I mostly focused on my nose, cheeks, and forehead, where I tend to get clogged pores.

I also didn’t see much improvement to my complexion following use of the kinetic mode, though I only used it for 4 weeks. Despite applying a serum liberally, as directed, I had a hard time getting the wand to glide smoothly across my skin. I did not try Trophy Skin’s serum, which may have made a difference.

Customer reviews tend to be very positive. Ease of use is one of the main highlights noted by reviewers. Some reviewers also mention that the microdermabrasion is more effective with the UltradermMD than with other, less expensive devices reviewers have tried.

Trophy Skin offers a 60-day, money-back guarantee on all of their products. If you are not satisfied with the product and have used it as directed, and the device is still in like new condition, you can return it for a full refund, minus the cost of shipping. They also offer a 1-year warranty.

Microdermabrasion is generally considered safe for most people. In 1996, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved microdermabrasion as a Class 1 medical device. Class 1 medical devices are those that are noninvasive and that do not cause significant change when used.

You may experience some redness immediately following treatment, which should resolve within a couple of hours. I did not experience any redness to my face, though I did notice redness on my neck for about an hour following treatment.

Microdermabrasion may trigger flare-ups for some skin conditions, such as eczema. Talk with a dermatologist before using this system, especially if you have a chronic skin condition, including skin cancer, herpes, or acne.

Microdermabrasion may help manage acne and reduce the appearance of some acne scars, but you should avoid using it in any areas with open sores.

You should also avoid using the system if you have an active sunburn.

One of the things that makes UltradermMD unique are the 3-in-1 treatment options. Other devices on the market do not offer this same combination of treatments and features.

If you’re looking for a less expensive microdermabrasion device with some similar features, the Microderm GLO Diamondsafe3D system may be a good option. Similar to the UltradermMD, it comes with diamond tips and features an auto setting. A treatment can be done in 4 minutes. The device is also compact and portable, with a rechargeable battery. Retailing for $289.99, it’s often available at a discounted rate online.

The CLARA 4-in-1 Pore Cleanser system is a handheld, portable microdermabrasion device that also includes a pore extraction tip and mode, LED light treatment, and a hot and cold compression mode. This is a good option if the appearance of size or cleanliness of your pores is a main concern. The CLARA device retails at $99, so it’s also a less expensive option.

Getting started with the UltradermMD is very simple. My device was provided for free by the manufacturer, so I cannot speak to the ordering process. Once it shipped, it arrived quickly and was ready to use straight out of the package. I recommend reviewing Trophy Skin’s how-to video to familiarize yourself with the system, and to then read the very short and simple instruction manual that comes with the device.

It’s always a good idea to speak with a dermatologist before starting any new skin care routine, including using an at-home microdermabrasion system. A dermatologist may be able to recommend products best suited for your specific skin care and concerns. They can also let you know if a certain product may not be a safe option for you.

If you experience redness that doesn’t go away, rash or irritation, or any other new skin concerns after using the UltradermMD, discontinue use and see a doctor.

Where on my body can I use UltradermMD?

You can use the UltradermMD on your face, neck, and décolleté. You can also use it on other parts of your body, such as your elbows.

How often should I use UltradermMD?

You can use the microdermabrasion mode two to three times a week. The pore mode may also be used two to three times a week, but should be used on different days from the microdermabrasion tip. You can use the kinetic mode once or twice a day, and Trophy Skin recommends using this mode daily for best results.

Do dermatologists recommend UltradermMD?

Yes.

UltradermMD by Trophy Skin is an easy to use, at-home system for microdermabrasion, pore extraction, and kinetic treatments. Microdermabrasion typically requires multiple treatments over the course of several weeks or months to see lasting results. While the initial investment for this system is a lot, the convenience of using it at home and the cost savings over time may make it a good option if you’re interested in microdermabrasion.

Ultimately, I was happy with the device, including:

  • the ease of use
  • small time commitment
  • speed of treatments
  • battery life
  • portability
  • microdermabrasion results

If I were purchasing one for myself, I might opt to go with the MicrodermMD instead. For my current personal needs, I don’t think the additional features of the UltradermMD are necessary. However, if you’re looking for a system with multiple features, this may be a great choice for you.
