Some Medicare beneficiaries choose to purchase a Medicare supplement plan. This is an optional insurance plan that pays for some of the costs leftover from your original Medicare coverage.

Medicare supplement plans are sold by private insurance companies. In addition to Anthem’s Medicare Advantage plans, they also offer four Medicare supplement plans:

  • Plan A
  • Plan F
  • Plan G
  • Plan N

Below, we’ll dive deeper into the different Medicare supplement plans available through Anthem, what services they cover, and how much they may cost.

Let’s break down some of the benefits that Anthem Medicare supplement plans may cover. Keep in mind that the specific benefits that are included can vary by the type of plan that you select, which we’ll outline later.

Part A benefits

Medicare Part Ais hospital insurance. It includes coverage for stays at inpatient facilities like hospitals and skilled nursing facilities.

The Part A benefits that can be covered in Anthem Medicare supplement plans include:

  • Part A deductible
  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Part A hospice coinsurance or copay
  • Part A skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • blood needed during surgery or for transfusion (first 3 pints)

Part B benefits

Medicare Part B is medical insurance. It covers outpatient services, home medical equipment, and some types of preventive care.

The Part B benefits covered by Anthem Medicare supplement plans may include:

A note on the Part B deductible

As of January 1, 2020, Medicare supplement plans are no longer allowed to cover the Part B deductible. If you became eligible for Medicare after this date, you cannot purchase plans that include this coverage (Plan C and Plan F).

However, you may still have one of these plans if:

  • you’re already enrolled in one
  • you were first eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020

Emergency care during foreign travel

Some Anthem Medicare supplement plans include coverage for emergency medical care that you may need when you’re traveling abroad. These plans cover emergency care that’s needed within the first 60 days of your trip.

The plan will pay for 80 percent of medically necessary emergency services after you’ve paid your deductible. This type of coverage has a lifetime limit of $50,000.

Anthem Medicare supplement plan extra benefits

Anthem offers additional benefits for their Medicare supplement plans. This program is called Anthem Extras and includes options for dental and vision coverage.

You can choose to opt into Anthem Extras when you enroll in an Anthem Medicare supplement plan. There’s an additional monthly premium associated with Anthem Extras.

Anthem Extras has several packages with different levels of dental and vision coverage. The exact services included depend on the package you select. You can also choose a dental-only plan if that best fits your needs.

Other benefits that are included in some Anthem Extras packages include:

  • Travel assistance. This benefit includes access to an assistance line that can help you arrange for medical transport or for a family or caregiver to visit you at an inpatient facility.
  • Member assistance program. This benefit gives you access to an assistance line you can call to get medical advice from a care manager.

Additionally, all Medicare beneficiaries who enroll in an Anthem Medicare supplement plan are also eligible for SilverSneakers. This fitness program often includes the use of gym facilities, fitness classes, and more.

Anthem offers four different types of Medicare supplement plans. Let’s examine each one and the coverage that’s included in a little more detail.

Anthem Medicare Supplement Plan A

Plan A is the most basic type of Medicare supplement plan. All companies that offer Medicare supplement plans must offer it. This may be a good option for those who would like a little more coverage than what’s included under Medicare.

Plan A includes:

  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Part A hospice coinsurance or copay
  • blood (first 3 pints)
  • Part B coinsurance or copay

Anthem Medicare Supplement Plan F

Plan F is the most inclusive Medicare supplement plan. In addition to what’s covered by Plan A, Plan F covers:

  • deductibles for both Parts A and B
  • Part A skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Part B excess charges
  • emergency care during foreign travel

Remember that due to recent policy changes, people who are new to Medicare after January 1, 2020, can no longer purchase Medicare supplement plans that include the Part B deductible. This includes Plan F.

Anthem Medicare Supplement Plan G

Plan G covers the same benefits that are covered under Plan F, except for the Part B deductible. Because of this, Plan G may be a good option for people who want a broad level of coverage, but cannot enroll in Plan F.

Anthem Medicare Supplement Plan N

Plan N covers everything included under Plan G, except for Part B excess charges. Additionally, while Plan N covers 100 percent of Part B coinsurance, you’ll pay a copay for some office and emergency room visits.

Medicare supplement insurance helps to cover costs that aren’t covered under original Medicare (Parts A and B). You may also see it called Medigap.

To buy a Medicare supplement plan, you must have original Medicare. About 25 percent of people with original Medicare are enrolled in a Medicare supplement plan.

You cannot buy a Medicare supplement plan if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan. However, you can have both a Medicare supplement plan and a Part D plan as long as your Medicare supplement plan doesn’t include prescription drug coverage, which some older Medigap plans do.

Medicare supplement plans are standardized. This means that each plan must include the same basic coverage, regardless of the company that offers it. However, companies may choose to include additional coverage as well.

Anthem offers four different types of Medicare supplement plan. These are:

  • Plan A
  • Plan F
  • Plan G
  • Plan N

All Medicare supplement plans are standardized and offer the same basic level of coverage. The exact benefits that you receive depend on the plan that you select. However, Anthem also offers additional benefits with their plans.

Enrolling in an Anthem Medicare supplement plan gives you access to the SilverSneakers fitness benefits. You can also opt into an Anthem Extras package to receive dental and vision coverage.

The cost of any Medicare supplement plan, including those available through Anthem, depends on the type of plan and your location. Be sure to compare different Medicare supplement plans before buying one.
