Hair care is getting personal — shoppers love to customize their routine whenever possible, and brands are showing up for the job.
This budding market, known as the personalized hair care market, was valued at $2.21 billion in 2021, and this number is expected to hit $10.55 billion by 2030.
One of the more popular products across this market is hair regrowth products like supplements, shampoos, serums, and more. There are quite a few of these to choose from, and it’s estimated that around 12.42 million Americans used hair regrowth products in 2020.
If you’re curious about testing the personalized hair care waters, keep reading.
Here we review MDhair, a company that offers customized hair regrowth treatment plans and products that, according to the brand, target specific root causes of hair loss.
We look at how MDhair works, the brand’s product range and pricing, customer reviews, and how effective hair growth products, in general, may be for some.
Launched in 2021, MDhair is a relatively new player in the personalized hair care game. Founded by dermatologist Yoram Harth and tech entrepreneur Oded Harth — who is trained in Artificial Intelligence (AI) — the company combines science-based hair growth products with AI technology to offer custom hair growth treatments.
Using a direct-to-consumer platform, MDhair offers personalized, medical-grade hair regrowth products based on the information you share in a quiz about your hair type, hair loss, age, gender, and other factors. According to the company, this information helps determine the best treatment plan for addressing the cause of your hair loss.
Subscribers receive a kit of products customized for specific hair care needs every 2 months. You can shop for individual products on their website as well.
The brand prides itself on its FDA-cleared medications and products containing adaptogens, botanicals, probiotics, and marine and plant peptides. The company says its mission is to make customized and effective hair loss treatment and support accessible.
Although they offer products and medications with evidence behind them, these medications are still considered to be over the counter (OTC), so you don’t need a prescription.
Along with using specialized AI technology to determine custom treatment plans, the company also offers free and unlimited medical chat support for subscribers, so you can ask questions or tweak your plan as needed along the way.
It will also ask if you notice hair loss in your family, if you’ve had COVID-19 recently, how stressful your life is, if you’ve given birth recently, how many vegetables are in your diet, and if you have any health conditions such as anemia or thyroid dysfunction (which are possible hair loss factors).
You have the option to upload photos of your hair, but you can also skip this.
In under 1 minute, you’ll get recommended products with detailed explanations, including ingredients and how they work.
You can also retake the quiz if you prefer to view different options.
You have to dig for pricing information about subscription plans on the company website, but it’s there.
The draw for this company is its custom regrowth subscription kit, which varies depending on the information you share with the brand during the quiz. The kit arrives every 2 months, and the price will vary depending on the plan and products you choose during checkout.
A note about pricing
While we scoped out the website, we found out that shipping seems to be free. However, it should be noted that this, as well as pricing for products and subscriptions, may be subject to change or may be different from what was accessed at the time of this writing.
The brand offers a 1-month trial for $29, which includes a customized scalp serum, treatment shampoo, free unlimited chat support, and free shipping. For now, it seems the brand usually offers free shipping, even on individual products.
If you don’t cancel your 1-month trial before it ends, you will be automatically renewed for a 2-month subscription plan, where you receive and are charged for a kit every 2 months. It’s difficult to find pricing information for the subscription plans, which is one drawback for this company right now.
There are three full plans to choose from:
- Essentials Routine: hair serum and shampoo for $58 every 2 months
- Advanced Routine: hair serum, shampoo, and supplements for $88 every 2 months
- Premium Routine: hair serum, shampoo, supplements, and collagen for $136 every 2 months
If you want to browse without a subscription, you can check out the products and their individual prices. Products, like the restore shampoo and conditioner, start at the lowest price from the company, at $22 per bottle. Some products, like marine collagen, can reach as high as $48 per bottle. For those who like to buy in bulk, buying more than one product at a time seems to cut costs. For example, a 3-pack of regrowth supplements saves 27 percent.
MDhair offers a range of hair product types, like shampoo, conditioner, serum, supplements, and medicated treatments.
The company says all of its products are:
- packed in recyclable packaging
The brand offers supplements, serums, and medicated treatments for addressing hair growth needs.
Minoxidil 5.0% is a treatment that the brand suggests for men with age-related hair loss or genetic hair loss, but the product page says it’s safe for all hair types.
The topical medication is FDA-approved and works to regrow thicker and stronger hair. It’s also vegan, cruelty-free, safe for color-treated hair, and free from fragrance.
You’ll also find this treatment available in a 2.0% formula, which the brand recommends for women with age-related or genetic hair loss. Both treatments are available at the same individual price of $24, and both come in a 2-ounce bottle.
MDHair restore serum is a hair loss treatment designed for postpartum or stress-related hair loss. Some of the ingredients the 1-ounce bottle contains for promoting hair growth are saw palmetto berry extract, biomimetic copper peptides, panax ginseng root, and rosemary leaf oil.
Both are free from sulfates, parabens, and are fragrance-free, and are safe for color-treated hair.
The shampoo contains pumpkin seed oil, keratin, probiotic lactobacillus ferment, rosemary leaf oil, and tea tree oil. This formula is designed, according to the brand, to lessen breakage and frizz and encourage natural hair growth.
The conditioner makes use of silk peptides, saw palmetto, and apple stem cell fruit culture extract to lessen frizz, add a silky feel, and support hair growth.
While you’re improving your hair, you may as well boost your lashes.
The brand offers an advanced eyelash serum (individual price is $32) that is vegan and safe for everyday use. It’s also free from sulfates, alcohol, and fragrance, a nice choice for those with skin sensitivities.
When it comes to hair growth products and supplements in general, Singh says things tend to be hit or miss. “Some patients can get surprisingly good results, and others see little to no difference,” he says.
Although he says he’s usually skeptical, he adds, “I cannot deny the efficacy that I see with supplements alone in several of my own patients. I believe that hair loss is a complicated issue, and there is no one easy solution for any patient. However, supplements and growth products are generally the first place to start for the majority of patients, and they have a very favorable safety profile with a low risk for side effects.”
Here’s how some of the main ingredients work for hair growth.
- DHT blockers: You’ll notice some hair growth ingredients are called DHT blockers. “In androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss), DHT is the hormone that causes hair follicles to miniaturize, which prevents the hair from properly growing,” Singh says. Blocking DHT, he says, will stop that process from happening. “Therefore, DHT blockers are extremely effective for treating androgenetic alopecia and are considered to be first-line treatment.”
- Minoxidil: This is one of the medicated treatments offered by MDhair. Singh says he commonly prescribes oral Minoxidil along with Finasteride or Dutasteride. “When I prescribe Minoxidil alone, I still find it to be helpful, but results vary based on the severity and length of time the patient has experienced hair loss. Topical minoxidil is a safe, convenient treatment that is available over the counter; however, oral minoxidil is more effective and is only available with a prescription,” he says.
- Saw palmetto: This one could use more research, but
existing researchis promising. It’s essentially a go-to for many hair growth products. “Saw palmetto has the same mechanism of action as finasteride (prescription medication for hair loss), which is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. Saw palmetto is one of the only OTC supplements that has proven benefits for hair loss,” Singh says.
- Biotin: It has benefits for your body, and it’s certainly popular for use in hair products, but it’s lacking research on its help with hair growth. Singh agrees, saying biotin “has surprisingly little medical evidence to support its use.”
- Pumpkin seed oil. This ingredient is a surprising DHT blocker with
evidenceon its side.
Shampoos, versus serums, and supplements
If you’re confused about which products to start with, that’s understandable. Singh says he favors oral supplements closely followed by serums.
“I believe that shampoos and conditioners can help with hair quality and improvement of texture, but I don’t believe they significantly help with hair growth,” he says.
Right now, this newer brand doesn’t have any information or rating to view on the Better Business Bureau website.
It also doesn’t have an account page on Trustpilot, a popular third-party review site.
The company does have a page on Reviews.io, a similar review website. Here, there are many reviews to scroll through, including photos. Many reviewers leave detailed accounts of their experience with the products, detailing the causes behind their hair loss, with some mentioning hair loss due to COVID-19.
These reviews are overall 5-star ratings, with an overall 4.8Rating from a total of 116reviews at the time of this writing.
Many users report that they notice hair growth results after just a few weeks and include compelling before and after photos. The few 4-star ratings mention minor complaints like wishing the product bottles were larger or wishing a two-in-one shampoo and conditioner was available. Along with tracking their hair growth progress, users also report shinier, and softer hair.
You can also read these reviews after you’ve completed your quiz. The landing page displays information about your recommended products, including ingredients and how they work, along with reviews. The reviews displayed here, generated by Reviews.io, seem more general, about the service itself instead of the products specifically recommended for you at checkout, although some comment on specific products and include photos.

You may have noticed we didn’t include Prose, another MDhair competitor. At this time, the brand has not passed our medical vetting process.
Singh tells us pregnant patients should avoid or use caution with these types of products, but otherwise, they are generally safe and relatively risk-free.
Remember to check ingredient lists carefully before using any new-to-you hair product, as you may find an allergen. Performing a patch test is always a good idea, too, to see how your skin will react to the new product before applying it to your entire scalp.
It’s a good idea to check with your doctor before adding supplements to your diet, too, in case they interact with any medications you’re taking.
Minoxidil is an over-the-counter nonprescription treatment, and its side effects should be considered before use.
MDhair mentions on its website that some people may notice more shedding in the first few months of growth. The brand says this is a typical side effect that will pass with time. Other common side effects are possible and can include: flaking, dryness, itching, and scalp irritation.
Although MDhair offers professional support, specific recommendations based on your information, and products with research on their side, it’s still a good idea to visit a dermatologist, if you can, to confirm your hair loss isn’t a sign of a serious health problem.
Singh adds that hair loss that isn’t considered androgenetic alopecia should be treated differently, which makes seeing a doctor important.
It’s a good idea to share as much information as possible with your dermatologist about your hair loss, including any family history of hair loss or other symptoms you may have.
This is especially important if you’ve also noticed:
- bowel movement changes
- scalp or body changes, including unexplained weight loss
- swelling in your limbs
