Jeuveau is a botulinum toxin type A injection used in the treatment of wrinkles. It’s also sometimes called the new Botox or “Newtox” for short because it’s a new version of the same active ingredient used in original Botox Cosmetic injections.

While Jeuveau shares some similarities with Botox, there are key characteristics that make this injection stand apart from other botulinum toxin injections.

Jeuveau is a better fit for certain types of facial wrinkles compared to Botox— all at a slightly cheaper price.

There are many considerations to make when choosing the right wrinkle treatment, including injectables.

Does Jeuveau have FDA approval?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Jeuveau for the treatment of wrinkles in February 2019. It’s a new type of botulinum toxin A injection.

Other injections in the same class include:

  • Botox
  • Xeomin
  • Dysport

Both Botox and Jeuveau contain the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A. This is neurotoxin that works by relaxing muscles beneath the skin. When used as a wrinkle treatment, these types of injections create a smoother appearance in the skin.

Botox was first approved for cosmetic use in 2002. It’s used to treat frown lines or glabellar lines (the wrinkles between your eyebrows), along with horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet (wrinkles at the corners of your eyes).

Since its emergence on the market, other types of botulinum toxin A products have been developed, including Jeuveau.

Since Jeuveau has been on the market for a shorter time, it’s currently only FDA approved for the treatment of glabellar lines.

A doctor may decide to use Jeuveau to treat other locations on the face and body, but this would be considered off-label use in that it hasn’t yet been studied and hasn’t been FDA approved.

While both injections have the same active ingredient, the precise formulas vary slightly. Deciding between Botox and Jeuveau may depend on trial and error. Some people respond better to one over the other.

However, Jeuveau may be a better option if you’re new to botulinum toxin injections and are looking for a cheaper option to start.

It’s also the best option if you’re looking to treat glabellar lines. Botox is used for these same wrinkles, along with other types of facial lines.

Before receiving Jeuveau injections for frown lines, you will need to have a consultation with a medical provider. They will determine how many injections you need, as well as which specific areas of your face to treat.

At your consultation, you can discuss the benefits and risks of your treatment. This is also a good opportunity to obtain the full estimated costs and to set up a payment plan, if needed.

While Jeuveau doesn’t require any downtime, you may decide to take the day off from work so you don’t feel rushed at your appointment.

Jeuveau is perhaps best known for its ability to treat frown lines (glabellar lines).

Two separate trials reported by the FDA found that 67 percent and 71 percent of people saw significant improvements after receiving these injections. This is compared to a 1 percent improvement reported in the placebo groups.

If you’re looking to treat other types of wrinkles around the mouth or eyes, you may consider talking to a dermatologist about other options that may be more effective. These may include the original Botox or other types of injectables made with hyaluronic acid.

During your consultation, your provider will outline a plan they will implement during your treatment session. The procedure for Jeuveau usually consists of the following:

  1. Your provider will wipe off any makeup or other cosmetics covering the area of treatment.
  2. Next, they will inject Jeuveau into five sites around your frown lines, using several small injections.
  3. The process takes up to 15 minutes. Once the injections are completed, you’re free to leave with no downtime required.
  4. As the botulinum toxin takes hold, your underlying muscles will relax and create a smoother appearance in your frown lines. You may start noticing slight results right away, with full results developing in about a week.

While Jeuveau may be considered a safe wrinkle treatment, it’s not completely risk-free. It’s important to go over all of the potential side effects and serious risks with your provider ahead of time.

Common side effects generally occur at the injection site and may include:

  • bruising
  • redness
  • pain
  • headaches

Jeuveau may also cause droopy eyelids or upper respiratory infections in some.

Sometimes these injections may spread to other parts of the body, resulting in botulism. This can cause rare, but serious, risks such as:

Medical emergency

Botulism is a life threatening emergency. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if suspect any side effects following your Jeuveau injections:

Symptoms may not appear for several days after treatment, so it’s important to be on the lookout long after your session.

Tell your provider about any underlying medical issues you have as well as medications, herbs, and supplements you take.

Jeuveau may not be appropriate for people with cardiovascular disease. The injections may also interact with muscle relaxers.

Unlike cosmetic surgery, there’s no downtime needed for wrinkle injections. You may go back to work and resume other activities as normal. However, be sure to avoid rubbing the site of your injections so that the active ingredients don’t spread and cause side effects.

The effects of botulinum toxin injections will naturally wear off after several weeks to months. You will need to schedule a new round of injections to maintain your results, but you should wait at least 3 months between each treatment.

As of 2019, the average cost of botulinum toxin injections was $408, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Jeuveau injections are said to be slightly cheaper than original Botox injections. Your exact cost will depend on how many injections are needed, as well as your provider and where you live.

Medical insurance doesn’t cover cosmetic injections. To help offset the costs, you can talk to your provider about discounts and payment plans. You may also be able to find occasional manufacturer coupons.

Jeuveau is the newest version of botulinum toxin A, the same active ingredient in the original Botox Cosmetic.

However, Jeuveau is primarily used to treat frown lines, while Botox may treat these along with other facial wrinkles.

Talk to a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon to see if Jeuveau may be a suitable option for your wrinkle concerns. They’ll also go over any potential risks and side effects so you can make the best decision possible.
