Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is approved for diabetes, but it might also help with weight loss. Here’s the scoop on when it’s covered by insurance, the price without, and where to get it.

Mounjaro is a medication approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. Its intended use is to help manage blood sugar levels in conjunction with exercise and a balanced diet.

Because some people may lose weight while on Mounjaro, it can also be used as a weight management option. However, it’s not approved for use as a weight loss medication, so your insurance may not cover the costs for this use.

And while you can buy Mounjaro without insurance, you’ll still need a prescription from your doctor.

Here’s what you need to know about Mounjaro, how much it costs without insurance, and where to get it.

Cost of Mounjaro without insurance

The manufacturer lists the price of Mounjaro pens as $1,069.08 for all strengths from 2.5-15 milligrams (mg). The monthly cost of Mounjaro when paying out-of-pocket is $900-$1,400, depending on the source and prescribed dose.

Keep in mind that some professionals offer discounts, but with others, you’ll have additional charges for subscription services or telehealth consultations.

At a doctor’s office

  • Price: Cost of office visit, plus around $1,000 per month for Mounjaro
  • How it works: You’ll have a consultation with a doctor and, if appropriate, they’ll prescribe Mounjaro. You can fill the prescription at the pharmacy of your choice.

Without insurance, you’ll pay out of pocket for a doctor’s visit, which can vary considerably by location and other factors. This traditional approach offers certain advantages over telehealth consultations.

During an in-person visit, your doctor can conduct a thorough physical examination, review your medical history, and consider your specific needs to determine if Mounjaro is an appropriate treatment option.

In some cases, your doctor may order additional laboratory tests as part of the assessment process before deciding to prescribe Mounjaro. These may include complete blood count, liver and kidney function tests, and blood glucose levels.

If your doctor deems Mounjaro appropriate, they’ll write a prescription specifying the dosage and instructions. You’re then free to choose a pharmacy, either online or in-person, to fill your prescription.

Your doctor will also schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

All of the providers on our list have been vetted by Healthline’s Content Integrity Team, which evaluates the medical credibility, business practices, and reputation of companies.

We also considered several other factors when compiling this list, including:

  • Availability: All of the providers we selected offer Mounjaro for those who are eligible. Most also provide virtual visits, making it easy to connect with a healthcare professional from almost anywhere.
  • Reviews: We prioritized services that are highly rated by online reviewers, especially when it comes to factors like customer service, ease of use, cost, and convenience.
  • Support: Many of the services on our list offer additional resources and support beyond medications to help you reach your goals and manage your weight long term.
  • Cost: We included services at a variety of prices so you can easily find an option that fits your budget. We also looked for services that are in-network with major insurance providers or offer assistance navigating insurance coverage on your behalf.

Mounjaro is the brand name version of tirzepatide, an injectable prescription medication commonly used to help treat type 2 diabetes. It may also be prescribed off-label as a weight loss medication for obesity and overweight.

It works by mimicking certain hormones in your body — glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists — that contribute to feelings of fullness.

These hormones also stimulate insulin secretion, which can help with blood sugar management.

There aren’t a lot of ways to save money on Mounjaro if you’re purchasing out of pocket, though you do have some options. Online pharmacies that handle a lot of orders, such as Amazon Pharmacy, may have better pricing, especially if the service requires a subscription, like Amazon Prime.

Some pharmacies may also offer bulk discounts if you’re willing to pay more up front. For example, if you purchase an 84-day supply instead of a 28-day supply through Amazon, you’ll save about $30 per month on the total prescription costs.

Mounjaro is currently only available as a brand-name option, so you can’t purchase a generic version at the moment.

The manufacturer lists the price of Mounjaro as $1,069.08 for all doses. You can expect to pay somewhere around this price when you pay out of pocket.

Without insurance, you can’t get Mounjaro for $25. A Mounjaro Savings Card is available through the manufacturer, Eli Lilly, but you’ll need health insurance. Depending on eligibility, you could pay just $25 for a 1- or 3-month supply of Mounjaro.

You can check eligibility through a brief three-question online quiz.

Check with your insurance company to see if they cover Mounjaro. They may cover it for FDA-approved uses but not weight loss.

If you’re interested in weight management tools, your doctor may be able to suggest alternatives that are covered by insurance.

Mounjaro costs around $1,000 for a month’s supply at Walmart Pharmacy. The cost may vary by location and applicable savings coupons.

If Mounjaro isn’t covered by your insurance, you can pay for it out of pocket instead.

However, even without insurance, a healthcare professional will need to first determine whether you are eligible and provide a prescription, either in-person or through an online service like Calibrate or Noom.

If your insurance doesn’t cover Mounjaro, you’ll pay about $1,000 out of pocket for a monthly supply of the medication.

You can purchase the medication with a prescription through some online pharmacies, or you can sign up for a more comprehensive weight loss program. If you choose the latter, you may also have to pay a monthly or yearly subscription fee for regular access to the service.
