A mattress is a pretty big purchase. Here’s what you’ll want to consider before you zero in on your final choice.
Sleeping style and firmness
The best way to start narrowing down your options is to reflect on your sleeping style. Are you a side sleeper, back sleeper, or stomach sleeper?
If you sleep on your side, you may want to go with a softer mattress so you don’t experience hip or shoulder pain. But if you sleep on your back or stomach, a firmer mattress will keep you from sinking into the bed.
Pain relief
It’s also helpful to think about whether you typically experience body aches and pains at night.
Mattress comfort is pretty subjective. Sometimes pain can just be a sign that you need to replace your mattress.
If you have persistent back pain, research suggests that a medium-firm mattress is optimal for comfort and spinal alignment.
Having a mattress that fully supports your body will also help contribute to a full night’s sleep.
A
Materials and type
Casper offers all-foam and hybrid mattresses, while Nectar offers all-foam mattresses.
If you like a softer bed that feels like it’s hugging you, or if you want better motion isolation, you may want to consider a foam mattress.
If you’re looking for extra support or dislike the “sinking in” feeling of foam, a hybrid mattress may work best for you.
Company policies
You’ll want to consider delivery service, company warranties, and trial periods before you make your purchase.
It’s also a good idea to take a look at customer reviews to see what people who’ve slept on the mattress have to say about it.
Nectar
Nectar mattresses are delivered rolled up in a box.
Nectar also offers white-glove delivery service. This means they’ll deliver and set up your new mattress for you. They’ll also remove your old mattress at your request.
Casper
Casper mattresses are delivered rolled up in a box.
Casper doesn’t offer white-glove delivery service for most products. However, if you buy a Wave Hybrid king or California king, you can pay extra to have someone deliver and set it up for you. They’ll also haul away your old mattress if you use this service.
Nectar
All Nectar mattresses come with a 365-night home trial, a “forever” warranty, and free shipping and returns.
If you decide you want to return your Nectar mattress, you’ll contact customer service and they’ll help you find a local donation center. Once you donate the mattress, Nectar will send you a full refund.
The warranty will repair defects found within the first 10 years. After that, Nectar will replace your mattress if defects are found.
Casper
All Casper mattresses come with a 100-night home trial, a 10-year limited warranty, and free shipping and returns.
If you want to return your Casper mattress within the 100-night trial window, the company will send a courier to collect your mattress. You don’t have to try to stuff it back in the box. After that, you’ll get a refund.
Nectar
Nectar mattresses are all CertiPUR-US certified. This means each mattress has foam made of materials that don’t damage the ozone or the environment (no mercury, lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and more).
The brand also uses organic wool, natural latex, and organic cotton.
Casper
Casper mattresses are also CertiPUR-US certified.
Nectar
Nectar has a BBB profile, but it’s not rated.
The company recently settled Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charges in 2018. Nectar agreed to stop making false claims that its mattresses were made in the United States. They’re actually made in China.
Nectar hasn’t had any major product recalls.
Casper
Casper is BBB accredited with an A+ rating.
Casper has been subject to a couple of lawsuits. A 2017 class-action lawsuit alleged that Casper tracked visitors on Casper.com to gain personal information like addresses. However, the case was dismissed in 2018.
In 2020, another class-action suit was filed based on the company not declaring profit-related issues to investors.
It doesn’t appear that Casper mattresses have been recalled due to safety concerns.
Nectar
Across the board, Nectar’s customer reviews on its website say the mattress is comfortable, soft, and cradles the body.
However, on Trustpilot, reviews are mixed. Nectar has two pages: one for the United Kingdom and one for the United States.
On the U.K. page, customers mostly share positive experiences, with a few poor reviews citing bad customer service.
On the U.S. page, customers mostly say they’ve had terrible customer service with a lack of a response being the overwhelming verdict.
Casper
On Casper’s website, the reviews are all positive. Customers say the delivery was simple and that the mattress provides the best sleep they’ve had.
Trustpilot also has a majority of excellent reviews. Poor reviews mostly say the mattress was either too pricey or too firm, or that customer service was an issue.
Which is better, Nectar or Casper?
Both companies offer a few selections of mattresses, but they’re probably better suited for different people.
Nectar can be a good choice for couples, light- and medium-weight side sleepers, and those who like a memory foam feel.
Casper mattresses are likely a better option for combination sleepers, larger back sleepers, and those who like a balanced foam feel.
What mattress is better for side sleepers, Nectar or Casper?
The majority of side sleepers will probably prefer the Nectar mattresses since memory foam can relieve almost all pressure on the shoulders and hips.
What setup is recommended for a Nectar and Casper mattress?
All mattresses will perform at their best if they’re set up properly. Any foundation, base, or adjustable frame that the respective companies sell is guaranteed to work with your mattress, though any retail foundation, base, or adjustable should work.
We do not recommend placing your mattress on the floor, or on a plastic base or homemade foundation.
Casper and Nectar are two established bed-in-a-box brands. Both have a small range of mattresses: all foam for Nectar and foam or hybrid for Casper.
To make your choice, consider your comfort and preferences, and be sure to take advantage of the free in-home trial.
No matter the brand and type of mattress you choose, you won’t go wrong with a mattress that’s designed for your comfort and tested by you directly.
