If you’re intrigued by the idea of a memory foam mattress but tend to overheat while you sleep, the Muse mattress may have caught your eye.

Muse, which claims to offer a uniquely cool sleep surface, aims to appeal to consumers who may have written off a “bed-in-a-box” because of temperature concerns. But is this mattress really a game-changer for the memory-foam curious?

If you’re wondering if a Muse mattress is a good fit for you, read on — we’ll cover everything you need to know.

Muse’s flagship product is their 12-inch memory foam mattress, which boasts a gel-infused memory foam top layer and a silky, cool-to-the-touch mattress cover.

The cover is removable and machine washable (though unsurprisingly, several reviewers say putting the cover back on a 50+ pound mattress is a nightmare).

Muse mattresses are made of several different types of foam. Each type of foam is CERTI-PUR certified, which means that it has been evaluated by a third-party for off-gassing and toxic ingredients.

Note that this doesn’t mean you won’t smell any chemicals when you first open the bed, as most beds that come compressed in a box do give off a funky scent when they first expand. It does, however, mean that the bed has been certified as being safe for everyday use.

Muse only sells one mattress, but they offer three different firmness options. Before you purchase, you get to select if you want your bed to be soft, medium, or firm. The firmness option that you choose won’t change the price that you pay for your mattress.

Buy the Muse mattress online.

Muse mattresses are only available to purchase online, so you won’t be able to touch and test the mattress in a store. Reading online reviews (like this one) are the best way to get informed before clicking the “purchase” button.

Compared to other bed-in-a-box competitors, Muse mattresses are at the more affordable end.

They also go on sale frequently. If you’re in the market for one, you may want to sign up for their email list. Muse also frequently offers free pillows as part of promotions, which is worth keeping in mind.

If you’re a hot sleeper, choosing a memory foam mattress is a bit of a gamble to begin with.

Still, for some people, the combination of Muse’s gel-topped mattress with the cool feel of the mattress cover will likely provide conditions for comfortable sleep.

Once you’ve decided to give Muse a try, you’ll need to select a firmness level.

Personal preferences play a big role in which of Muse’s three firmness options will work best for you — what’s soft for someone might be too firm for someone else!

Here’s a bit more information on the firmness scale to help you make your choice. And remember: reading reviews can help guide your decision, but at the end of the day nothing compares to laying on the mattress yourself for a handful of nights.

The Muse — Soft

According to the Muse website’s sleep preference quiz, their “soft” option is best if you have a petite body type, if you’re on the lighter side, and if you sleep on your side or on your back.

If you’re over 230 pounds you may find this level too soft, no matter what position you sleep in. If you switch positions often during the night, you may also feel the “soft” option prevents you from doing so without waking up.

The Muse — Medium

Muse’s “medium” option is designed to be comfortable to the widest array of sleepers. If you sleep with a partner and you have different firmness preferences, the “medium” might be a compromise that works for both of you.

A systematic review published in 2015 showed that “medium-firm” mattresses are optimal for promoting sleep comfort and quality.

The Muse “medium” is great for side sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds. If you like a bit of body-contour and pressure relief when you lay down, this mattress might be great for you.

The Muse — Firm

According to consumer reviews, Muse’s “firm” option actually ranks somewhere between medium-firm and medium on the softness scale. If you have a larger body type, the firm option will give you the most support while still feeling soft to the touch.

If you sleep on your back or stomach and weigh under 230 pounds, or if you are a combination sleeper who moves around a lot at night, the “firm” option might be the best Muse offering for you.

All Muse mattresses are 12-inches high once they have fully expanded, no matter what firmness option you select.

Muse was founded in 2011 and is based in Asheville, North Carolina. The company prides itself on offering a quality, product made in the U.S. at an affordable price point.

There are no pending or past lawsuits or mattress recalls associated with Muse Sleep, according to the U.S. Consumer Safety Commission.

However, there’s also no Better Business Bureau ranking or accreditation currently associated with Muse. SkyTex, which owns Muse, also has no BBB accreditation.

Customer reviews indicate that Muse has a pretty good reputation with their consumer base, and folks say their customer service is readily available to assist you if you need it.

They even call out their customer service manager by name (which is, apparently, Samantha) on their website.

The Muse mattress is shipped to your location for free via FedEx. You may need help carrying it inside your home because the box will weigh 50 pounds or more.

Unlike a handful of competitors, there’s no white glove delivery service or old mattress removal currently available from Muse.

When you take the mattress out of the box, it’s compressed and shrink-wrapped. You’ll need to carefully remove the plastic wrap and move your new mattress to an open space so it can expand.

Within the first few hours, the mattress will mostly have expanded to its full size, but it can take up to 3 days for the mattress to reach its full height.

You can sleep on it within a few hours of opening the box, but you might not want to — the Muse mattress, like other compressed bed-in-a-box brands, may give off a powerful offgassing scent for the first few days.

The Muse mattress comes with a 120-night return policy. The industry standard is a 100-night trial, so it’s slightly more generous than some other brands.

Muse actually requires that you try the mattress for a minimum of 20 days before they will initiate the return process. If you do need to return the mattress, Muse will work with you to donate your mattress to a charity.

You’re also permitted to exchange your mattress for a different firmness level. Exchanging for firmness is a bit complicated, and it requires donating your first mattress, getting a refund, then coordinating with Customer Service to initiate a brand new order.

If you’re thinking about purchasing a Muse mattress, here’s the short list of what to keep in mind:

Pros of Muse

  • Muse mattresses are very affordable compared to some other bed-in-a-box competitors, and offer a lot of similar features to higher-priced beds.
  • Muse Sleep offers a 120-night trial and a 10-year limited warranty covering damage to your mattress, so your purchase is well-protected.
  • The Muse mattress cover is removable, machine washable, and designed to feel cool.

Cons of Muse

  • Muse only offers an all-foam mattress, which means if you already know you aren’t a big fan of memory foam, you’re not likely to love their products.
  • Exchanging the mattress for firmness is a complicated process that requires donating the mattress, getting a refund, and then ordering a new one.
  • While the cover may be heat-wicking, your mileage may vary with the cooling gel memory foam layer. Some hot sleepers may still feel like they can’t get cool enough.

The Muse mattress is an affordable direct-to-consumer option, especially for hot sleepers who are willing to take a chance on memory foam. It’s thicker than many other memory foam mattresses, and reviewers say great things about Muse’s customer service.

Combination sleepers and people with heavier body types might be less likely to love this mattress.
