Now, there’s no denying it: A mattress is a considerable financial investment. Luckily, mattress companies love a good holiday sale, and the Black Friday mattress deals are holding strong through Cyber Monday and the holiday season.

It’s easy to get swept up in a good discount, but if you purchase a mattress on Black Friday, it should be one that meets your sleeping needs — not just one that’s a great deal.

Here are a few considerations on how to choose a mattress that best supports your sleep:

  • Firmness. This can vary based on your sleeping position. Back and stomach sleepers may need a firmer mattress with more support. Meanwhile, side sleepers can benefit from a bit more cushioning to help reduce pressure in certain regions — particularly the shoulders. If you’re a combination sleeper, a medium-firm mattress may be a good bet.
  • Materials. Got allergies? Ensure the mattress you buy is hypoallergenic (like a latex free mattress if you have latex allergy). Beyond allergies, consider whether you want an all-foam mattress or a hybrid model that merges foam with inner coils. The latter may offer the extra support back and stomach sleepers typically require.
  • Special features. If you sleep hot, look for matresses designed to support airflow, regulate body temperature, and that use cooling materials. If you already experience low back pain, seek out a design with a supportive zone at the lumber spine.
  • Certifications. You might look for certifications that tell you the mattress was made sustainably, through a transparent supply chain, and using safe and organic materials. A few common certifications you’ll see are CertiPUR-US, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), and Greenguard Gold.

The supply chain issues of 2021 mean it’s best to shop early if you can, particularly if the mattress is a gift. These ongoing issues have led many brands to start promotions earlier than usual. You’ll see that most of the mattress deals below are already live and many may continue through Cyber Monday and into December.

While these are the best deals at the moment, mattress brands have been known to announce surprise additional discounts closer to Black Friday and Cyber Monday that are valid for shorter windows of time. You can choose to take advantage of current discounts or hold out in hopes of saving a few extra bucks.

The old days of Black Friday doorbusters had us waiting outside stores at midnight, but because online shopping has become so necessary and popular, many online deals are just as doorbuster-worthy.

In fact, you could argue that online stores require less overhead to operate, and they can afford to offer bigger markdowns.

The key here is to do your research. If you see a good deal online (like any of the Black Friday mattress deals below), do a quick Google search to double-check that a popular brick-and-mortar retailer isn’t offering a better price.

When will Black Friday deals start for 2021?

Because of supply chain complications and the demand for online shopping, many cyber mattresses deals have already started.

That said, the best deals are typically live the week of Thanksgiving, so you might see some brands increase discounts even more on the days leading up to the holiday.

Many will remain the same from what our sources tell us, but everyone loves a good surprise sale, and some companies may choose to up the savings at the last hour.

How do I know if I need a new mattress?

Discount or no discount, a mattress is only worth the investment if you need one. Mattress lifespan depends on the type and can range from 10 to 25 years.

However, A 2021 study found that — over a period of 5 months — participants reported more frequent low back pain if they were sleeping on a firm or foam mattress for more than 3 years.

If you’re experiencing pain or difficulty sleeping, it could be a sign it’s time for a new mattress. But always consult with your doctor to rule out any potential underlying health conditions.

What’s the best type of mattress?

Mattresses generally fall into one of three categories: memory foam, innerspring, and hybrid.

Memory foam will offer the most cushion, but it might not be the most supportive for stomach or back sleepers. Innerspring will generally be the firmest, and hybrid is somewhere between the two.

Many hybrid mattresses are designed with additional cushioning in an attempt to offer the best of both worlds, and they can be a good option for combination sleepers who move around a lot or partners who can’t agree on firmness.
