Simmons Beautyrest has expanded its mattress collection since opening in 1925. Browse our review of their different collections and a hands-on review of one of their mattresses.

For decades, when people thought about mattresses, Simmons Beautyrest mattresses came to mind. Simmons is an established mattress brand and industry pioneer.

In 1925, they were the first company to introduce a mass-produced bed with pocketed coils (the Beautyrest), and in 1958, they launched queen and king mattress sizes.

Since then, Simmons Beautyrest mattresses have remained popular. In this review, we’re taking a closer look at the Beautyrest mattresses available for purchase online and the company behind them.

Plus, we walk you through our hands-on review of one of the brand’s most luxurious models (plush pillow top people, we’re talking to you).

Below, we’ll walk you through the different collections Beautyrest has available. What’s special about these collections is that each mattress comes with different feels, classes, and sizes.

The mattress sizes offered are standard twin XLs to California kings. The firmness feels are also standard, but not all mattresses have multiple feels available. The Black mattress, for example, has seven types of firmness feels to choose from, while the Harmony Hybrid mattress only comes in two firmness options.

What’s unique about Beautyrest mattresses is that, in addition to choosing the size and firmness, you can choose a mattress by class and series.

The classes and series vary based on mattress collections, but the general points of each category build with each tier. Classes are used for the Black Collection, and the Series system is used for the Harmony Collection and the Pressure Smart mattress. The Beautyrest Select Collection does not have an additional class or series to choose from.

Some features from these classes and series include more cooling technology, premium contouring foams, and more luxe materials. Follow along for a complete breakdown of each of the Beautyrest mattress collections.

This collection currently includes two thick hybrid mattresses made from premium materials — the Black Mattress and the Black Hybrid Mattress. Both feature pocketed coils for support and pressure relief and layers of contouring foam for comfort.

The Black mattress features a tall quilted top, and the Black Hybrid offers a smooth body-contouring memory foam topper with more advanced cooling.

Both mattress covers include antimicrobial protection and are available in twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king.

Black Mattress

black mattress
  • Price: $2,199 for a queen Grand-B Class with a medium feel
  • Type: hybrid
  • Height: starts at 13.5 inches (increases depending on firmness level)

The Beautyrest Black mattress was designed for support and a lifted feel.

It features plant-based cooling technology, a lightweight quilted pillow top, and a design that mixes its proprietary pocketed coil system with five layers of memory and gel foam. The foam layers are designed to provide breathability, airflow, and pressure relief.

Satisfied reviewers say it really does sleep cool and provides a good night’s rest. However, some reviewers note problems with sagging and durability after several months.

This model is available in seven types of feels, including plush and firm pillow top, and four different classes to choose from.

Black Hybrid Mattress

black hybrid mattress
  • Price: $2,999 for a queen Enhanced LX-Class with a medium feel
  • Type: hybrid
  • Height: starts at 12.5 inches

The Beautyrest Black Hybrid shares the same cool-to-the-touch fabric cover and coil support system as the original Beautyrest Black, but the hybrid has a memory foam topper instead of a lightweight quilted pillow top.

The high quality memory foam is designed to deliver pressure point relief, and the steel coils offer support and durability. The pocketed coil system also plays a hand in motion control, absorbing energy to reduce motion transfer, while a smooth memory foam top offers a body-contouring feel.

Unlike the original Black mattress, this model is only available in three feels. However, it does have four classes.

Reviews for this mattress on the Beautyrest site are overall positive, with some customers reporting difficulty finding the right firmness level for their sleep needs. A few reviewers say this mattress needs more edge support, which is a common complaint with mattresses that feature memory foam.

The Beautyrest Harmony Collection offers four models of feels, focusing on contouring pressure relief and motion isolation.

This collection is also eco-friendly, with its sleep surface made from plastic bottles hand-collected from coastlines and ocean-bound waterways.

This collection includes twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king.

Harmony Lux Mattress

  • Price: $2,199 for a queen Exceptional Coral Island series with a plush pillow top feel
  • Type: hybrid
  • Height: starts at 12.5 inches

Like other Beautyrest mattresses, the Harmony Lux is a high-end hybrid mattress with pocketed coils and pressure-relieving cooling memory foam layers.

It’s available in seven firmness levels and features two series to choose from.

Our freelance writer, Breanna Mona, tested the Harmony Lux mattress in the Exceptional Coral Island series with a plush pillow top feel. “While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea,” Mona says, “those who want to sleep in a bed and not on it will truly adore this mattress.” This model is made to sink into like a cloud.

Mona loved the feeling of having the “pillowy comfort wrapping around [her].” In the initial days of testing, she noticed that she didn’t toss and turn as much as usual, and also found that the contouring of this particular pillow top mattress hugged her body in a way that helped relieve menstrual cramps. Mona also found that the Harmony Lux was “incredibly cool to the touch, something hot sleepers can appreciate.”

While her experience with the Harmony Lux was positive overall, she notes that the mattress doesn’t bounce back. “After you get up, you will notice a dip where your body lays all night… the dip fills back out during the day and is ready to go again when you meet it for bedtime. Some reviewers on Trustpilot complain about sagging, but the warranty does cover body impressions of certain sizes, depending on which model you choose.”

Overall, Mona recommends this mattress for side sleepers or “small-bodied sleepers who live for softness. However, plush mattresses are not best suited for those with back pain.”

Harmony Lux Hybrid Mattress

  • Price: $1,699 for a queen Premier Ocean View Island series with a medium feel
  • Type: hybrid
  • Height: starts at 12 inches

You’ll notice that Beautyrest displays some mattress models as standard and others as hybrid, but they’re all composed of some sort of coil system combined with foam layers, which makes them all hybrids if you ask us.

That’s the case with this model, which is available in three firmness levels and two different series.

It shares the same sustainable fabric cover as the Harmony Lux but includes additional layers of proprietary memory and comfort foam.

Most reviewers are satisfied, saying the mattress is comfortable and offers good pressure relief.

Harmony Mattress

  • Price: $999 for a queen Exceptional Cypress Bay series with medium feel
  • Type: hybrid
  • Height: starts at 12 inches

The Harmony is one of the company’s budget-friendly options, coming in under $1,000 for a queen.

You can think of this as an entry-level pick that gets you a luxurious feel at a fraction of the brand’s usual high-end price point. It’s a hybrid mattress that combines a pocketed coil system with pressure-relieving memory foams, topped with moisture-wicking fabric for a cool and dry night’s sleep.

Like the other Harmony mattresses in this collection, the company says this model is also reliable for motion isolation, so your sleep partner won’t disturb you with movement throughout the night. It’s available in six firmness levels and two series options.

Reviews on the Beautyrest site for this mattress are positive, with reviewers saying they’re pleased with the support and comfort, especially at the more affordable price point.

Harmony Hybrid Mattress

  • Price: $999 for a queen, plush or firm
  • Type: hybrid
  • Height: starts at 12 inches

Rounding out the Harmony collection is the hybrid version of the Harmony mattress. The price point is accessible compared with others at just under $1,000 for a queen.

This mattress is available with two firmness levels and only one series. It features a body-contouring sleep surface and boasts the brand’s sustainable efforts in materials. Reviewers are pretty pleased with this mattress, praising it for high support and quality.

Beautyrest PressureSmart Mattress

  • Price: $2,249 for a queen hybrid with medium feel
  • Type: standard, hybrid
  • Height: starts at 11 inches

This PressureSmart mattress’s more basic design is created with pressure relief in mind.

It’s available in three styles and six firmness options.

The company considers the standard model an innerspring option, though it includes memory foam on top of its pocketed coils. One of these layers is a gel layer designed for lumbar support.

Like other Beautyrest mattresses, it’s wrapped in an antimicrobial cover. Reviews for this model on the company page are mixed, with buyers noting some trouble selecting the feel that best suits them.

This collection is a budget-friendly option from the brand, but like its other more high-end collections, it also promises support, comfort, and cooling.

Beautyrest Select Mattress

  • Price: $699 for a queen
  • Type: hybrid
  • Height: starts at 11.5 inches

This mattress is another accessible option from some of the otherwise pricey collections from the company.

There are four options for firmness. A queen mattress that is firm, medium, or plush is $699. If you opt for the plush pillow top, it’s an additional $100.

There are fewer reviews on this mattress than others on the company website, but the small amount is positive overall, though one reviewer reported a sag in the middle of their mattress.

Beautyrest Select Hybrid Mattress

  • Price: $1,099 for a queen
  • Type: hybrid
  • Height: starts at 13 inches

At a slightly higher price point, this model is shown as a notch above the first Select model.

Beautyrest considers this model hybrid, while the other is classified as innerspring. The standard Select model features memory foam top layers, which technically makes it more like a hybrid than a traditional innerspring mattress.

This model offers more body-contouring foam layering and is available in three firmness levels.

It currently has a small number of reviews on the company’s product page, but its rating is strong for comfort.

Pros

  • easy to find at many third-party retailers
  • established brand

  • hybrid design includes cooling memory foam layers and a support system of pocketed coils
  • many options and upgrades for firmness, pressure relief, and cooling technology
  • available in all standard sizes from twin to California King, including twin XL
  • all foams are CertiPUR-US certified

Beautyrest mattresses are sold in nearly 3,000 stores, and most can be purchased online directly from Beautyrest (though certain sizes and models can sell out quickly). The company has a search feature on its website to help you locate a store in your ZIP code.

Buying online means you can’t test out a mattress before paying for it, so Beautyrest offers a 100-night, in-home trial. All mattresses purchased online directly from Beautyrest are shipped with the company’s complimentary white glove delivery and setup.

Prices for Beautyrest mattresses on its website start around $800 for its budget mattress in the smallest size up to almost $3,500 for a California king in its most luxurious option.

Remember that selecting your preferences, like firmness or more advanced materials, can add a significant extra cost, depending on the model you’re considering. The company does offer seasonal sales.

Getting your mattress

Beautyrest white glove delivery means they manage all the details for mattress delivery and set up, plus removal of your old mattress for free. The company works with XPO Logistics, and it takes between 4 and 6 weeks for XPO to contact buyers to schedule delivery.

In Mona’s experience with XPO Logistics, delivery and mattress removal are incredibly fast and smooth. “The company contacted me 20 minutes before they arrived, giving me enough time to prep my space for the new mattress and the removal of my old mattress. The entire experience took less than two minutes to complete once they arrived.”

A customer or adult must be present for the delivery. Note that they don’t ship to Hawaii or Alaska, and they also don’t ship internationally.

Return policy

Mattresses bought directly from Beautyrest through its website can be returned for free within 100 days for a full refund. The company will work with you to have the mattress picked up and removed — all you have to do is contact them via email to begin the process.

Exchanges are also an option, but completing an exchange will void the sleep trial for the new mattress.

Beautyrest mattresses purchased through another retailer are subject to that company’s return policy.

All the Beautyrest mattresses available on the company’s website are hybrid mattresses, offering some version of a supportive coil system and layers of memory foam. However, the company distinguishes some models as standard mattresses and others as hybrid options, which feature significant amounts of foam layers compared to others.

Hybrid mattresses are generally a good choice for those who want the comfort of foam with the support and responsiveness of coils.

Beautyrest offers some recommendations on its website about the suitability of its mattresses for specific sleep positions (unless the model you’re interested in is sold out). The combination of supportive coils and layers of memory foam in its mattresses should offer spinal alignment and pressure point relief no matter how you prefer to sleep.

Most mattresses also offer a decent or extensive choice of firmness levels, which can help you customize your purchase. If you sleep on your side, you might do best with something softer. Back and stomach sleepers may prefer a firmer sleep surface.

The mattresses on the Beautyrest website are also available with options and upgrades designed to address specific sleep preferences and issues.

You can usually opt for upgraded cooling features if you sleep hot, a pillow top if you prefer a particularly indulgent sleep surface, and additional comfort layers for breathability and support.

Simmons Beautyrest is one of the most well-known mattress brands in the United States — the company has been in business since approximately 1870.

Though the company was seemingly once accredited with the Better Business Bureau, where they once boasted an A+ rating, customer complaints have since lowered their score to an F, largely for issues with customer service and warranty claims.

The company responds to customer service complaints on BBB to work to resolve issues.

Customer reviews

Reviews for Beautyrest mattresses on its website are generally positive, but some people report dissatisfaction with mattress performance, comfort, and longevity.

However, the company does respond directly to all negative reviews. They request that unhappy customers contact Beautyrest directly for a resolution.

Reviews on third-party sites like Trustpilot and Consumer Affairs are mixed, with some customers citing durability issues. For example, unhappy reports on Trustpilot note that their mattresses dip in the middle despite the sleepers being average in size.

Beautyrest does offer a warranty that covers body impressions, an issue common to plush mattresses in general.

The same bedding manufacturer owns both brands. As its name suggests, Serta Simmons Bedding also owns Simmons and Tuft & Needle brands.

When it comes to back pain, the more support, the better.

No matter which brand you’re shopping from, opting for a medium-firm mattress, an option with innerspring technology instead of only memory foam or plush topping, will provide optimal support for back pain.

Those who experience back pain may find that Beautyrest firm or extra-firm models offer suitable support and comfort. It may help to test out a mattress in-store, but the company’s 100-night trial period offers flexibility in case your pick needs more or less support.

Side sleepers have a good amount of choices with Beautyrest.

They may find supreme comfort with ultra plush models, like the one our writer tested, or they can choose a model that reaches the brand’s medium models, as a medium mattress is the universal firmness level.

Beautyrest is a widespread brand in the mattress world. Until 2019, Beautyrest mattresses were only sold in stores. Today, Beautyrest mattresses are available in over 3,000 stores, and a selection is now available online.

The company has been in business for more than 100 years, and reviews of its mattresses are generally positive.

However, some people note that the mattresses don’t last as long as expected, but the company offers a 10-year warranty covering certain body impression issues depending on the mattress.

Beautyrest offers a 100-night sleep trial so you can test out a mattress in the comfort of your home before committing to it.
