NordicTrack is a trusted name in the exercise equipment industry.

The brand is possibly best known for its Nordic ski machines (hence the name), but it also makes rowing machines, exercise bikes, and treadmills.

NordicTrack offers several treadmills, including the Commercial 2950 — the brand’s most expensive and high tech machine — and the EXP 7i, which is its most affordable treadmill.

The Commercial x22i is the company’s middle-of-the-road option in terms of price, though it still offers plenty of special features and training options.

As the machine is quite heavy and bulky, assembly is a two-person job. While it comes with an instruction manual and links to instructional videos on NordicTrack’s website, reviewers note that assembling the machine can take as long as 3 hours.

The NordicTrack Commercial x22i treadmill is powered by a self-cooling, 4.0 continuous horsepower (CHP) motor and can reach speeds of up to 12 mph (19 kph).

It also offers an impressive amount of incline options, ranging from -6%–40%. Though, as 40% incline is quite steep, you’ll need a ceiling height of at least 7’4″ (220 cm) if you plan on working out at the maximum grade.

Another benefit of this treadmill is its long running deck, which accommodates users up to 6’5″ tall. However, as it’s not foldable, the long length also means the device takes up a good chunk of floor space.

One thing to note is that while the belt is cushioned, the cushioning level isn’t adjustable like it is on several other NordicTrack treadmills.

While this isn’t a major downside for casual users, the x22i may not provide enough shock absorption for long-distance runners or those prone to knee injuries or shin splints.

In addition to a whopping 50 preset workouts, the treadmill allows access to iFit — a streaming platform with hundreds of live and on-demand trainer-led workouts — using the machine’s 22-inch (56-cm) integrated touchscreen.

What’s more, as the x22i is an iFit-enabled device, you can take advantage of the app’s Automatic Trainer Control, which allows your trainer to adjust your speed and incline during classes.

Other benefits of iFit include performance tracking and destination workouts filmed from locations around the world.

The x22i treadmill also includes built-in speakers, a cooling fan, a water bottle holder, and Bluetooth capabilities.

Your purchase also includes a 1-year free iFit family membership. After the trial period, you can choose to renew your subscription for $396 per year for a family plan or $180 per year for an individual plan.

Keep in mind that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-home assembly may not be available in all areas.

Warranty and returns

The NordicTrack Commercial x22i treadmill includes the following warranties:

  • 10-year on the frame
  • 2-year on parts
  • 1-year on labor

If you aren’t satisfied, you can return the machine within 30 days of purchase, though the company charges a $250 shipping fee, plus a 10% ($299.90) restocking fee, so choose wisely before you buy.

Overall, customers are impressed by the quality and design of the Commercial x22i treadmill.

Several note how luxurious it feels, while others find iFit’s destination workouts to be more motivating than studio-based classes.

The most common complaint is its substantial size and weight, as the treadmill requires ample workout space and isn’t easy to move.

Its weight also makes it tricky to assemble and nearly impossible to carry upstairs without the help of at least one, if not two, people.

Some reviewers also dislike that iFit doesn’t sync with wearable devices like the Fitbit Sense or Garmin Fenix.

If you’re interested in a treadmill with both decline and incline options, you’ll want to go with one of the NordicTrack Commercial models.

Plus, both the x22i and x32i offer up to a 40% incline, which is significantly steeper than the 15% incline offered by most competitors.

While the x32i boasts a larger screen, the NordicTrack Commercial x22i provides all of the same training features, but at a lower price.

The Peloton Tread is the closest competitor to the NordicTrack Commercial x22i. The Tread is slightly smaller and less expensive, though at the end of the day, the biggest difference is the app compatibility.

If you already own an iFit-enabled device, the x22i is the best option, as you don’t have to worry about paying for yet another subscription. However, if you own a Peloton bike or simply prefer the Peloton app, the Tread is the way to go.

Note that the x22i also includes 50 built-in workouts, so there’s always the option to opt out of iFit if you don’t want to pay the monthly fee. Contrarily, the Peloton Tread only offers programs through the Peloton app, which costs $39 per month.

Finally, if you’re tight on space and don’t need an integrated touchscreen, the Nautilus T618 is worth considering.

In addition to its smaller size, the treadmill is foldable and includes many of the same core features of the x22i. Plus, it’s nearly half the cost.

The x22i is a solidly built treadmill with tons of features.

It’s also quiet, making it a good option if you don’t want to worry about disturbing your neighbors or family members.

While it’s not cheap, it’s worth the investment if you’re interested in iFit’s trainer-led classes or the treadmill’s impressive incline and decline options.

Just keep in mind that it’s quite large, so it’s not ideal for small spaces.

Additionally, distance runners or those prone to shin splints may want to consider a treadmill that offers adjustable cushioning, such as the NordicTrack Commercial 1750.

As long as you have room in your budget and house, the NordicTrack Commercial x22i is a solid choice for both beginner and seasoned runners.

With tons of training options and the ability to run on trails from around the world, the x22i makes it fun and easy to work up a sweat from the comfort of your living room.
