Stribild (elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) is a prescription drug that’s used to treat HIV in certain situations. The drug comes as an oral tablet that you usually take once daily.

Stribild is approved for adults and some children to treat HIV. Specifically, it’s approved as a first treatment or to replace other HIV medications.

Before prescribing Stribild to replace other HIV medications, your doctor will confirm the following:

  • your viral load is undetectable,* and
  • you’ve taken a stable treatment regimen for at least 6 months, and
  • your past treatments haven’t stopped working, and
  • your HIV hasn’t become resistant† to any of Stribild’s active ingredients

* Viral load measures the amount of HIV in your blood. Doctors use this measure to help assess the effectiveness of treatment.
† If your HIV is resistant to any ingredients in Stribild, the drug may be less effective in treating your condition.

Stribild is a single-tablet HIV regimen. It contains four active ingredients in one tablet. (An active ingredient is what makes a drug work.) These are:

Accessible drug containers and labels

Some pharmacies provide medication labels that:

Let your pharmacist know if you have difficulty opening medication bottles. They may have tips to help, or they may be able to supply Stribild in an easy-open container.

It’s important to take your Stribild doses every day. This allows the drug to work as effectively as possible in your body.

If you do miss a dose of Stribild, take it as soon as you remember. But if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. And then take your next dose at its usual time. If you’re not sure whether you should take a missed dose, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

If you need help remembering to take your dose of Stribild on time, try using a medication reminder. This can include setting an alarm or downloading a reminder app on your phone.

Do not take more Stribild than your doctor prescribes, as this can lead to harmful effects.

Below are answers to some commonly asked questions about Stribild’s dosage.

Is Stribild’s dosage similar to the dosages of Genvoya?

The forms and how often you take Stribild and Genvoya are similar. Both drugs are oral tablets that you take once per day to treat HIV.

Each also contains the same four active ingredients: elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, and tenofovir. Stribild and Genvoya both contain the same amounts of elvitegravir, cobicistat, and emtricitabine.

But these drugs contain different forms and amounts of tenofovir. Genvoya contains 10 mg of tenofovir alafenamide, while Stribild contains 300 mg of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate.

Studies have shown that tenofovir alafenamide may cause fewer side effects than tenofovir disoproxil fumarate.

Your doctor will prescribe the drug and the dosage that’s right for you. To learn more about how these drugs compare, talk with your doctor.

How long does it take for Stribild to start working?

Stribild starts working soon after your first dose, but you likely won’t feel it working in your body. Your doctor will use blood tests regularly to confirm that the medication is working. They’ll check whether it’s lowering your viral load or keeping it undetectable.

If you have other questions about what to expect from your Stribild treatment, talk with your doctor.

The sections above describe the usual dosage provided by the drugmaker. If your doctor recommends Stribild for you, they’ll prescribe the dosage that’s right for you.

Remember, you should not change your dosage of Stribild without your doctor’s recommendation. Only take Stribild exactly as prescribed. Talk with your doctor if you have questions or concerns about your current dosage.
