Start with the best climate, soil, and water, and you’ll end up with the best hemp. That’s the thinking behind Cornbread Hemp, a company building on 250 years of hemp tradition in Kentucky.

The brand credits the Bluegrass State’s limestone-filtered water, rich soil, and agricultural microclimate for the quality and strength of its full-spectrum cannabidiol (CBD) oil, which is United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) certified organic and made with hemp flowers only — no stems, stalks, leaves or seeds.

Here’s what else you should know about Cornbread Hemp and the company’s products.

Pros

  • Most products are certified USDA organic.
  • Everything is third-party lab tested.
  • Products come with a 30-day guarantee.
  • The company is family-owned and crowdfunded.
  • Products are made with hemp flower only.

Cons

  • Some products are limited to a single potency option.
  • All products are full-spectrum, meaning they can contain up to 0.3% THC.
  • The price point is higher than other brands.

Cornbread Hemp is a full-spectrum CBD brand that shipped its first products in April 2019. Although newer to the CBD commerce world, the company is rapidly making a name for itself with organic hemp and a flower-only approach to CBD.

Cornbread Hemp offers a slew of products ranging from oils, capsules, gummies, and more.

The family-owned company was launched by cousins Jim Higdon and Eric Zipperle. They wanted to be the first CBD brand to offer USDA organic CBD oils sourced from Kentucky-grown hemp.

The brand prides itself on its flower-only method, which removes stems, stalks, and leaves to offer more potent products.

The Cornbread Mafia

Higdon’s interest in hemp started long before he co-founded Cornbread Hemp. In 2012, he wrote a book about the Cornbread Mafia — a group of Kentucky-based Vietnam war veterans who, in the 1970s and 1980s, became a network of 70 outlaw farmers running an extensive illegal cannabis organization.

Higdon’s research and reporting on the eventual bust of the Cornbread Mafia led to the inspiration for the Cornbread Hemp name.

Cornbread Hemp is not accredited with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), but has an A rating based on customer feedback. At the time of publishing, Cornbread Hemp hasn’t been involved in any lawsuits or received a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warning letter about any products.

Right now, the brand’s site shows nearly 4,000 product reviews. Less than 5-star product ratings on the website are buried pretty deep under the glowing remarks (and there’s no way to filter the reviews by rating). There are currently only two reviews on Trustpilot, a third-party review site, and both are positive.

Cornbread Hemp is made with Kentucky-grown hemp, and the brand shows a commitment to making high quality, organic, full-spectrum CBD products.

Flower only

Although CBD and other cannabinoids are found in all parts of the cannabis plant (except the seeds), they’re found in the highest concentrations in the flowers. Additionally, some people report that the flower has a better flavor than the other parts of the plant.

Cornbread Hemp uses only the flower, which the brand says lends the final product a “delicate, floral flavor.”

Organic ingredients

On the company website, ingredients are listed in full for every product. The brand partners with organic hemp farmers in Kentucky and uses organic sugarcane ethanol to extract CBD oil, which means the finished product doesn’t have the harsh bitterness commonly associated with many full-spectrum CBD oils.

Cornbread Hemp was also the first CBD brand in Kentucky to receive USDA organic certification. That’s unusual in the CBD industry, where not many brands are certified organic.

Third-party testing

Third-party certificates of analysis (COAs) from ISO 17025-certified labs are readily available on Cornbread Hemp’s website. You can search by batch number if you want to find results for your specific product, or you can review the COAs for all products before making a purchase.

The COAs are comprehensive, offering:

  • the cannabinoid profile, including CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) amounts
  • contaminants, like:
    • foreign matter
    • pesticides
    • mycotoxins
    • residual solvents
    • heavy metals
    • microbials

Some COAs also include a terpene profile, and they all include the date and batch number.

Additionally, Cornbread Hemp claims that the facility where the products are made is third-party certified to follow the FDA’s current good manufacturing practices (cGMPs).

Consumer education

The company prioritizes education. The website is filled with information concerning Cornbread Hemp products as well as common questions relating to usage, dosage, effects, and more.

Cornbread Hemp’s lineup of organic CBD products is limited, but it covers all of the basics. The brand offers:

  • oil
  • capsules
  • topicals
  • gummies
  • oils for cats and dogs

Note that there isn’t currently much research on CBD for dogs or cats. We recommend talking with your veterinarian if you’re considering giving CBD to your pet.

All Cornbread Hemp products are made with full-spectrum CBD. Full-spectrum CBD contains a small amount of THC, while broad-spectrum and CBD isolate don’t.

Pricing is in the moderate to expensive range for CBD products. However, unlike many other brands, most of the products are USDA certified organic, and they’re all made with flower only.

The company offers a rewards program and a discount program. Anyone can join the rewards program to earn points when they shop.

Meanwhile, the discount program is designed to make CBD more accessible to everyone. Military personnel, veterans and dependents, first responders, healthcare workers, teachers, students, non-profit employees, and others who qualify can access discount codes every time they shop.

Additionally, Cornbread Hemp offers subscription discounts. If you like a product, you can save 25% by subscribing and scheduling your order to arrive every 30, 45, or 60 days.

There are over 1,000 5-star reviews on Cornbread Hemp’s website relating to products and service, and the feedback on the web is also positive.

Cornbread Hemp offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If customers are unhappy for any reason, they can return products within 30 days of delivery for a full refund (minus shipping costs). Exchanges are also available.

To help you make your choice, we’re listing a handful of Cornbread Hemp products that have great reviews and, most importantly, meet our strict product vetting guidelines.

CBD Lotion, Skin Formula

  • Price: $$
  • CBD type: full-spectrum
  • CBD potency: 500 mg per 2-oz. container
  • COA: available online

Organic lemongrass, eucalyptus, and rosemary are blended with full-spectrum, flower-only hemp extract in this well-reviewed lotion. This formula is designed for general skin issues. It’s made to absorb quickly with no oily residue, and it has a smooth, thin consistency. That means a little goes a very long way, so apply sparingly.

Sydney tried this lotion for 1 week. “I have chronic jaw pain due to clenching at night, so I used the lotion just before going to bed at night and in the mornings when I woke up,” she says.

“I noticed an almost immediate effect. The lotion absorbed into my skin quickly, and it helped relieve pain and tension in my jaw.”

Whole Flower CBD Oil

  • Price: $–$$$
  • CBD type: full-spectrum
  • CBD potency: 375, 750, or 1500 mg per 1-oz. container
  • COA: available online

This CBD oil is made with just two ingredients: organic hemp and organic medium chain triglyceride (MCT) coconut oil.

The brand says it has a floral and earthy taste, making it a good alternative to the mild and smooth taste of the Distilled CBD Oil. The whole flower version is designed for nighttime use and is sold in three potencies.

Sydney tested this oil for 3 days. “I didn’t like the flavor or feel of the CBD oil in my mouth. Having to hold the oil under my tongue for a minute was my least favorite part,” she says. But it did have benefits.

“I did find that the product worked really well for me. Almost immediately, I noticed the relaxing effects of the CBD. It noticeably reduced the stress I was feeling and made me feel ready for bed,” she explains.

“I loved this product because it worked faster than others I’ve tried (like CBD gummies and capsules). Overall, this product gets a thumbs-up from me.”

CBD Lotion, Menthol Formula

  • Price: $$
  • CBD type: full-spectrum
  • CBD potency: 500 mg per 2-oz. container
  • COA: available online

Soothe muscles and joints with this blend of organic menthol, lemongrass, eucalyptus, and full-spectrum, flower-only hemp extract.

Sydney tested this lotion for 1 week, saying, “Although the 2 ounces of lotion in the jar doesn’t seem like much, I learned quickly that a little goes a long way. The lotion absorbed into my skin quickly, and it helped relieve pain and tension in my jaw. The menthol formula also left a nice cooling feeling.”

“The only downside to both the skin and menthol formula lotions that I found was that they both left my skin feeling a little bit greasy,” she says.

“However, I noticed a lot of other customer reviews explicitly state that they didn’t find the products to be greasy, so this may be an issue specific to me and my skin type.”

Organic Berry CBD Gummies

  • Price: $$–$$$
  • CBD type: full-spectrum
  • CBD potency: 300 or 1,500 mg per container, 10 or 50 mg per single gummy
  • COA: available online

These gummies are made with real organic fruit and no corn syrup. They’re also made with apple pectin instead of gelatin, which means they’re 100% plant-based and vegan-friendly.

They’re made with full-spectrum, flower-only CBD and up to 2 mg of THC per serving, but that signature hemp fragrance and flavor are both minimal. Instead, the gummies have a sweet scent and taste, with just a hint of earthiness as you chew.

“As a vegetarian, I was pleased that these gummies don’t contain gelatin, which is often an issue I have with these types of products,” Sydney says. “The flavor is good and doesn’t taste too strongly of hemp. And the ingredients are all natural and organic, so I know exactly what I’m putting into my body.”

“I planned to test them for a week, but I noticed the effects much sooner. After 2 days, I felt less stressed, especially at work, and could tell the gummies were working. I also slept well at night, though that’s not usually an issue for me.”

Also, while Sydney tested the Berry flavor, Cornbread Hemp typically offers a Peach flavor and other seasonal, limited edition flavors.

Most convenient Cornbread Hemp product

Full Spectrum CBD Capsules

  • Price: $$$
  • CBD type: full-spectrum
  • CBD potency: 750 mg per bottle, 25 mg per capsule
  • COA: available online

If you want to avoid the mess and flavor of oils and gummies completely, Cornbread’s CBD capsules are worth considering. They’re made with MCT coconut oil, full-spectrum hemp extract, and porcine gelatin capsules. That means they’re not vegetarian.

CBD capsules are designed for quick convenience, and these are no different. Customers describe them as easy to take and effective for pain management.

Sydney tried these capsules regularly for 1 week.

“I started with one 25-mg capsule per day but increased to two capsules when I didn’t notice many effects. Fortunately, I don’t experience issues with sleep or pain (with the exception of jaw pain, for which I used topical Cornbread Hemp products), so I was primarily using these capsules for stress. After increasing to two capsules, I noticed feeling mildly less stressed during the workday.

“I liked having the ability to choose how much CBD to try, and the capsule form made it easy to alter my dosage. The capsules aren’t too big, and they have an outside coating that makes them feel smooth and easy to swallow.

“After testing both Cornbread Hemp’s CBD gummies and their capsules, I found that I preferred the gummies for a few different reasons. First, the gummies are vegetarian and vegan-friendly, whereas the capsules are not due to the gelatin. I also felt more noticeable effects from the gummies, which have a higher amount of CBD (comparing one gummy to one capsule).

“Lastly, the gummies seem to be a better bang for your buck, based on the price and amount of CBD contained in the products,” Sydney says.

  • quick and easy to use
  • no messy measuring (compared with oils)
  • highly rated among users

Cons

  • not vegetarian
  • includes 1 mg THC per capsule (a drawback for some)
  • pricey

There are lots of claims about CBD, but it’s important to parse anecdotal evidence from actual research. What’s more, many studies relating to CBD have been done with animals, meaning it doesn’t always have a direct correlation to CBD’s effects in humans.

Still, some research shows promise:

  • A 2018 review looked at studies relating to cannabis and pain over 43 years. Researchers found CBD could be helpful for pain relief stemming from cancer, fibromyalgia, and neuropathy.
  • A 2019 study found CBD could also help lower anxiety levels and improve sleep quality.
  • Researchers in a 2014 study measured CBD on human skin samples. They found CBD both inhibited oil production and offered anti-inflammatory benefits. Researchers concluded CBD may be beneficial as an acne treatment.

CBD may offer certain health benefits. Specifically, it could help relieve symptoms associated with:

Choosing a CBD product largely depends on the effects you’re hoping to achieve. For full-body effects, a capsule, gummy, or oil is a good option.

CBD capsules and gummies are easy to dose, since each one will contain a pre-measured dosage of CBD.

Oils are more versatile. They can be taken sublingually (beneath the tongue) or added to foods and drinks if you find the flavor off-putting on its own.

For relief in specific spots, like an aching back or sore knees, consider a topical.

Every product on the Cornbread Hemp website includes directions for recommended use, which varies from product to product.

In general, here’s what you’ll do:

  • Topicals. Topical products, like Cornbread Hemp’s lotions and balms, are applied to the skin for on-the-spot relief.
  • Oils. CBD oils are taken sublingually, or beneath the tongue.
  • Gummies. CBD gummies are chewed and swallowed.
  • Capsules. Capsules are swallowed with water or another beverage.

Dosing varies depending on factors, like your weight, age, metabolism, and the condition you’re hoping to treat.

Cornbread Hemp has recommended serving sizes that can be a good baseline, but keep in mind that CBD often requires a bit of trial and error to find what works for you.

If you’re new to CBD and aren’t sure how it’ll affect you, start with a small dose, like 5 to 10 mg. You can work your way up from there if needed.

Research from 2017 suggests CBD is safe, but some people may still experience side effects. In most cases, side effects include:

  • fatigue
  • diarrhea
  • changes in weight or appetite

These side effects may be more likely if you’re pairing CBD with high-fat meals. Research from 2020 found that meals high in fat can significantly increase CBD blood concentrations.

Before trying CBD, it’s a good idea to talk with a doctor or other healthcare professional. That’s particularly important if you’re currently taking medications that could interact with CBD, including those with a grapefruit warning.

Many people take CBD for pain relief, anxiety, sleep, and other uses. A healthcare professional can help you identify the causes behind these issues, make suggestions for lifestyle changes, and discuss other treatment options outside CBD.

Is Cornbread Hemp a good CBD brand?

Yes. The company has a good reputation and appears to be committed to transparency. They stand behind their products with a 30-day return policy.

Are Cornbread Hemp products lab tested?

Yes. Cornbread Hemp sends every batch of every product to a third-party lab where they’re tested for contaminants. The brand also confirms that product labels reflect tested amounts.

Lab reports are easily accessible on the website and through QR codes on individual products.

Are Cornbread Hemp products organic?

Yes. The company is USDA certified organic by Ecocert. Cornbread Hemp was the first CBD company in Kentucky to earn that designation. Cornbread Hemp currently has 10 products that are USDA certified organic, but its CBD capsules and CBD oil for pets are not.

What CBD products does Cornbread Hemp sell?

You’ll find CBD oils, lotions, capsules, gummies, and pet products at Cornbread Hemp. All products are full-spectrum, which means they contain all the hemp plant’s cannabinoids, including up to 0.3% THC.

What is whole-flower CBD?

Whole-flower CBD means only the flowers of the hemp plant are used in the extraction process.

Many companies use a whole-plant approach, which means the entire plant is used during extraction, including leaves, stumps, stalks, and seeds.

Cornbread Hemp prioritizes a flower-only approach because hemp flowers contain the highest concentration of cannabinoids. The company says that by excluding lower-quality plant parts, their CBD oil has a more enjoyable flavor.

Will Cornbread Hemp products show up on a drug test?

Using Cornbread Hemp products may result in a positive drug test. All of the brand’s products are full-spectrum CBD, which means they contain trace amounts of THC (up to 0.3%, and some products contain higher amounts). Although considered a very small amount overall, 0.3% is still high enough to show up on a drug test.

There are myriad CBD companies on the market today, and it’s not easy to stand out in the crowd.

But with a commitment to flower-only, full-spectrum, USDA certified organic CBD products — and a willingness to stand behind those products with a no-questions-asked, 30-day return policy — Cornbread Hemp manages to do just that.
