Coffea cruda is a homeopathic remedy made from unroasted coffee beans. Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine developed about
- Principle of similarity. A disease can be cured with a remedy that produces similar symptoms as a condition in healthy people. For example, coffee is a stimulate so some proponents of homeopathy believe Coffea cruda can help treat people who are overstimulated.
- Law of minimum dose. The lower the dose of a treatment, the greater its effectiveness.
Despite a lack of evidence, some people believe that Coffea cruda can treat a variety of conditions like:
- attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- pain
- difficulty falling asleep
- mental hyperactivity
- headaches
- toothaches

- are animal studies
- have limited sample sizes
- have conflicts of interest
- have a poor study design with a high risk of bias

According to proponents of homeopathy, people who are nervous, overstimulated, excitable, or hypersensitive may benefit from taking Coffea cruda.
Coffea cruda’s ability to treat these conditions is based on the homeopathic “principle of similarity.” Or, in this case, the idea that because coffee can cause nervousness and excitability when ingested, it may be able to treat symptoms related to overstimulation or nervousness.
But there’s no scientific evidence to back this logic for Coffea cruda or any other homeopathic remedy.
After performing a large review of studies, the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council found no reliable evidence that homeopathy is effective at treating any condition.
After performing their own review of studies, the European Academies’ Science Advisory Council also came to the conclusion that homeopathy isn’t effective at treating any disease. They also released a statement: “The claims for homeopathy are implausible and inconsistent with established scientific concepts.”
The problem with Coffea cruda supplements
Coffea cruda is derived from unroasted coffee beans. In theory, it could contain all the active ingredients in coffee, like caffeine and the antioxidant chlorogenic acid, that have known or plausible effects on human health.
But Coffea cruda sold as a homeopathic supplement is often diluted millions of times in water or alcohol. Many products are so diluted that no Coffea cruda can actually be detected.
When you buy homeopathic supplements, you’ll see the strength listed with an “X” or “C”. Products are often sold in the range of “6 X” to “30 X” or “6 C” to “30 C.”
“X” refers to how many times it has been diluted with water in a 1:10 ratio.
For example:
Dilution | Amount of Coffea cruda | Amount of water or alcohol |
1 X | 1 tsp | 10 tsp |
2 X | 1 tsp | 100 tsp |
3 X | 1 tsp | 1,000 tsp |
4 X | 1 tsp | 10,000 tsp |
5 X | 1 tsp | 100,000 tsp |
6 X | 1 tsp | 1,000,000 tsp |
A product diluted to 30X would have 1 teaspoon of Coffea cruda per nonillion (a 1 with 30 zeros behind it) teaspoons of water or alcohol.
“C” refers to how many times the product has been diluted with water in a 1:100 ratio. A teaspoon of “6 C” Coffea cruda would be diluted with a trillion teaspoons of water. A 30 C product would be diluted to 1 teaspoon of Coffea cruda for each novemdecillion (a 1 with 60 zeros) of water.
No high-quality human studies support the idea that Coffea cruda can effectively treat any medical condition or that its effects come from anything other than the placebo effect.
Coffea cruda for anxiety and mood
A low-quality
The researchers found 30 C of Coffea cruda decreased subjective tension in anxious subjects and increased feelings of tension in hostile subjects.
But the design of the study has a high risk for bias. Measurements used in the study were subjective, and there was no control group.
Coffea cruda for ADHD
There’s no scientific evidence that Coffea cruda can treat ADHD.
Coffea cruda for improving sleep
There’s no compelling evidence that Coffea cruda can help you fall asleep faster or improve your sleep quality.

Coffea cruda is unlikely to cause side effects since it’s usually highly diluted. Homeopathic products aren’t FDA-regulated, so they can potentially contain dangerous ingredients not on the label.
Coffea cruda may also contain non-medical ingredients like grain alcohol or lactose that may cause an allergic reactions in some people.

Despite often being marketed as safe and natural, homeopathic products can contain potentially dangerous ingredients not listed on the label and should only be used after speaking with a doctor.
