One of the more well-known CBD brands in the United States is Charlotte’s Web. Charlotte’s Web creates and sells a number of different products that contain CBD.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical found in cannabis plants. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD doesn’t make you feel intoxicated, but it does have some promising health benefits. Though research is ongoing, studies done to date indicate that it might help ease pain, inflammation, skin conditions, anxiety, and more.

Charlotte’s Web was founded by seven siblings — the Stanley brothers — who have years of experience in cultivating hemp.

In 2012, the Stanley brothers created a hemp strain that was high in CBD and low in THC. The strain was used to create a tincture for Charlotte Figi, a girl who had a rare seizure condition called Dravet syndrome. The tincture decreased the severity and frequency of her seizures.

Named after Charlotte Figi, Charlotte’s Web now sells a range of hemp-based wellness products infused with CBD.

Cannabis terminology

  • Hemp: a type of cannabis plant that contains less than 0.3% THC
  • Full-spectrum: a type of CBD product that contains all the compounds found in cannabis, including both CBD and THC — federally legal products will still contain less than 0.3% THC
  • Broad-spectrum: a type of CBD product that can contain all compounds found in cannabis except THC
  • Isolate: a type of CBD product that contains only CBD

Charlotte’s Web is a CBD that’s great for people looking for a company that’s been around a while, is highly rated, and offers a nice range of products with varying potencies.

It’s also a good choice for people looking for U.S.-grown certified organic hemp at an affordable price, compared with some of their competitors.

It doesn’t hurt that the company also offers discounts for veterans, students, teachers, first responders, and nurses.

  • well-known brand that’s been around for a long time
  • lots of positive user reviews on their website
  • relatively inexpensive
  • good breadth of products
  • veterans discount
  • good transparency
  • batch-specific certificates of analysis (COAs)
  • made from U.S.-grown certified organic hemp

  • batch-specific COAs only available with batch number
  • reviewers on third-party sites complain of poor customer service

Charlotte’s Web is one of the oldest, most well-known CBD brands. The company displays many positive reviews on its website. They’re also certified by the U.S. Hemp Authority. Charlotte’s Web recently won Product of the Year 2022 for their CBD gummies.

Charlotte’s Web is also a certified B-corp. This certification is awarded to companies that meet certain standards for social and environmental responsibility and transparency.

Charlotte’s Web is transparent about what goes into its products, offering batch-specific COAs online. You need a batch number to see the COA for the specific batch of the product you bought. However, they do provide a list of recent sample COAs if you want to peruse them before making a purchase.

Charlotte’s Web COAs look a little different compared to other CBD companies. The company provides a branded summary instead of the actual results from the labs, but they do disclose which labs they used. They explain on the company website that the COA will detail the product batch levels of:

  • cannabinoids (including CBD and THC)
  • heavy metals
  • pesticides
  • residual solvents

Manufacturing processes

Charlotte’s Web is transparent about their process, giving customers an overview of their planting process and quality control processes here.

Additionally, the facility in Louisville, Colorado, where they make their products follows the FDA’s current good manufacturing practices (CGMPs).

While this is something all CBD brands must do, Charlotte’s Web has gone the additional step to get a third-party certification from NSF International that they’re following all GMPs. This confirms that their facility uses the appropriate equipment, methods, and controls to make their products.

Charlotte’s Web offers products at a variety of potencies.

While their “original formula” oil provides 50 milligrams (mg) of CBD per milliliter (mL) of product, they also sell a low potency oil with only 7 mg/mL and a high potency oil with 60 mg/mL, plus a few other potency levels in between.

Gummies and capsules range from 10 to 25 mg per serving, while topicals range from 100 to 750 mg per container.

The variety of potencies makes it easy to find a product that works for you, whether you’re brand-new to CBD or have a little more experience.

Compared with other companies and considering potency, Charlotte’s Web products are relatively inexpensive. They range from around $15 to more than $100. The company also offers a discount for veterans, and they have a rewards program. As we mentioned earlier, Charlotte’s Web also offers discounts to students, teachers, first responders, and nurses.

Charlotte’s Web grows its own hemp in Colorado, Kentucky, and Oregon. While some of their hemp isn’t currently certified organic, the company is in the process of getting certified. All products are gluten-free, non-GMO, and vegan.

As mentioned above, all products are third-party tested so you can be sure of what you’re getting.

Charlotte’s Web oils

Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil, 17 mg/mL

  • Price: $$–$$$
  • CBD type: full-spectrum
  • CBD potency: 17 mg per 1-mL serving
  • COA: sample available online; batch-specific available with batch number

Charlotte’s Web markets this CBD oil as their go-to, everyday CBD oil, and a good option for people who haven’t tried CBD. The product contains only hemp extract, coconut oil, and flavoring (Mint Chocolate, Lemon Twist, or Orange Blossom). You can also opt for the unflavored version, which has an olive oil base.

This product has 17 mg of CBD per 1-mL dropper, but if you’re new to CBD, you may want to start with half a dropper full. If you’re looking for an even lower-dose product, you can try the 7 mg/mL oil.

The 17-mg/mL oil is isopropyl alcohol extracted, whereas most of Charlotte’s Web products are carbon dioxide (CO2) extracted. Each extraction process has pros and cons.

CO2 extraction is a solvent-free extraction process, so there are no harmful chemicals in the final process. However, this process can also remove the terpenes from the plant. Terpenes may offer their own beneficial effects.

With alcohol extraction, solvents such as ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, butane, and hexane can leave more terpenes in the final product — though there’s a risk of possible residual solvents in the final process. You can read more about both of these extraction processes here.

  • good choice for people new to CBD
  • can be used as an everyday CBD product
  • nice variety of flavors

  • some newer CBD users may need to use half a serving at first to see how it affects them
  • alcohol extraction comes with risk of possible residual solvents in the final process
  • contains coconut oil, which is an allergen for some

Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil, 60 mg/mL

  • Price: $$$
  • CBD type: full-spectrum
  • CBD potency: 60 mg per 1-mL serving
  • COA: sample available online; batch-specific available with batch number

With 60 mg of CBD per mL, this product is the most potent oil Charlotte’s Web offers. So, if you need something stronger than the product above, this might be a good choice for you. It comes in Mint Chocolate, Orange Blossom, and Lemon Twist flavors.

The cannabinoids in this oil are extracted via CO2 extraction. This may be a more environmentally friendly extraction method than alcohol extraction.

  • the highest concentration offered by the brand
  • good choice for experienced CBD users
  • environmentally friendly extraction process, compared with alcohol extraction

  • not a good choice for people new to CBD
  • pricier, compared with the brand’s other products

Charlotte’s Web THC-Free CBD Oil, 25 mg/mL

  • Price: $$
  • CBD type: broad-spectrum
  • CBD potency: 25 mg per 1-mL serving
  • COA: sample available online; batch-specific available with batch number

For some, hesitation around CBD may come down to concerns over THC being included in products, even if only in trace amounts.

Charlotte’s Web promises this CBD oil is free of THC. For the brand, THC-free means trace amounts less than 0.01%.

As a broad-spectrum oil, it includes additional cannabinoids and plant compounds found in the hemp plant, along with the promise of completely removing THC. (CBD isolate products usually only include CBD, no additional compounds.)

The company goes on to say with this item, it’s “unlikely” that you would fail a drug test.

  • contains less than 0.01% THC
  • broad-spectrum is a good choice for people new to CBD

  • still a possibility to fail a drug test, even with trace amounts of THC
  • only one flavor, Mint Chocolate, is available

Charlotte’s Web is hitting the big leagues.

The company recently became the official CBD of Major League Baseball (MLB). This means that MLB recognizes that Charlotte’s Web products are safe and provide benefits to muscle recovery, stress and anxiety, and sleep.

The multi-year deal will include a line of MLB-inspired products. The first to launch is Charlotte’s Web SPORT, Daily Edge.

Infused with a range of cannabinoids, such as CBD, cannabichromene (CBC), and cannabigerol (CBG), this product aims to help people recover faster after a workout. It also claims to provide calm, improved focus, and better sleep.

The product is also NSF Certified for Sport, which means that it has undergone rigorous testing for safety, performance, quality, and more.

Other products from the MLB-inspired line include topicals, gummies, and oral sprays. Many, if not all, will feature the MLB logo.

Charlotte’s Web makes it easy to shop by CBD product type. You can decide which form of CBD is best for you, and then shop for those products on the brand’s site.

If you want to focus on a specific area, you can shop for topicals to apply directly to the body. Or if you’re interested in ingesting CBD, you can shop for oils or premeasured options like capsules and gummies.

Once you have picked out a product with a potency that makes sense for your experience with CBD, you can see if you qualify for a discount. If you’re a veteran, student, teacher, first responder, or nurse, you can score some discounts. If not, you can still sign up for the brand’s reward program to learn about deals in the future.

Charlotte’s Web says ground shipping and handling are free within the US for orders over $74 (before tax and discounts). Shipping usually takes 5 to 7 business days from the time you place your order to when it arrives at your door. For faster shipping, Shoprunner customers get free 2-day shipping and free returns on all purchases priced over $49.

Is Charlotte’s Web a good brand of CBD?

Charlotte’s Web is a well-known CBD brand in the United States, offering a decent selection of products. The company’s CBD gummies won the Product of the Year award for 2022 in the CBD gummies category.

Will Charlotte’s Web CBD get you ‘high’?

CBD, in general, will not get users high. However, some CBD products contain THC, which can cause an impairing effect. If you consume a large amount of a potent full-spectrum CBD product, you may ingest enough THC to produce a high.

What’s the best Charlotte’s Web CBD product for beginners?

The brand offers a 17 mg CBD oil, which is a fairly low dose option that may be useful for those new to CBD. They also offer 15 mg CBD gummies, which are usually easier to take on the go.

Charlotte’s Web is a well-known CBD brand with a wide range of products, including oils, gummies, capsules, and topicals. Before you try any CBD products, it’s a good idea to speak with your doctor.

Is CBD legal? The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the legal definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act. This made some hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC legal at the federal level. However, CBD products containing more than 0.3% THC still fall under the legal definition of marijuana, making them illegal at the federal level. Some states have legalized CBD, so be sure to check state laws, especially when traveling. Also, keep in mind that the FDA has not approved nonprescription CBD products, and some products may be inaccurately labeled.
