Cannabidiol (CBD) is cropping up everywhere these days, and that includes foot care. It makes sense: Aching feet can be downright frustrating, and the therapeutic benefits of CBD might offer much-needed relief.

Combining a topical CBD product, like a cream, lotion, or salve, with a soothing foot massage can be a great way to pamper aching feet after a long day.

To help you get started, we found six of the best CBD options for tired feet.

CBD is one of the many compounds found in cannabis plants. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD won’t make you “high.”

Instead, animal research suggests CBD offers therapeutic benefits, including anti-inflammatory effects.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that research around CBD is ongoing. More studies, including human studies, are needed to confirm its effects and determine the safe and appropriate dosage.

CBD glossary

  • Full-spectrum. This means a product contains all the hemp plant’s cannabinoids, including THC (less than 0.3 percent per federal law in the United States). Full-spectrum CBD also contains other beneficial hemp compounds, like flavonoids and terpenes.
  • Broad-spectrum. Broad-spectrum CBD contains many components of the hemp plant, but it doesn’t contain THC.
  • Isolate. These products contain pure CBD only, with no other cannabinoids.

While research on CBD is in its early stages, some research suggests it may help with pain. For instance, a 2015 study done on rats found that topical CBD helped relieve inflammation and pain related to arthritis.

It’s possible that the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD may help relieve aches and pains in feet, whether they stem from uncomfortable shoes, a long day on your feet, or something more chronic.

All the products listed below meet our rigorous criteria for quality. Each CBD cream in this article:

  • is made by a company that provides proof of third-party testing by an ISO 17025-compliant lab
  • is made by a company that discloses the source of their hemp
  • contains no more than 0.3 percent THC, according to the certificate of analysis (COA)
  • passes tests for pesticides, heavy metals, and molds, according to the COA

We also considered:

  • the company’s certifications and manufacturing processes
  • product potency
  • overall ingredients
  • indicators of user trust and brand reputation, such as:

You might also notice that some of our picks include extra ingredients that may help with pain, including arnica, camphor, and menthol.

Finally, we took some of these products for a whirl to see how they do in real-life applications.

Just because CBD products are readily available doesn’t mean they’re effective or even safe.

It’s important to look for products from reputable brands that are transparent about where they grow their hemp and how they make their products.

Look for current and comprehensive COAs from independent and verified third-party labs. This is the best way to ensure that a CBD product passes tests for contaminants and that it matches the potency labeled on the container.

Consider whether a cooling or warming sensation is preferable to you, and look at labels to see what a product offers.

If you’re looking for a CBD foot cream specifically to relieve pain, ingredients like menthol and eucalyptus may offer additional cooling relief.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that it’s not currently known how CBD or other cannabis compounds interact with other plants and herbs.

Additionally, be sure to talk with your doctor when choosing a product.

A CBD lotion or cream is applied directly to the skin.

For tired feet in particular, combining a CBD lotion, cream, or salve with a foot and lower leg massage can bring additional relief.

Follow the directions on the packaging for proper application. To learn about proper dosing of CBD products, check out our guide here.

Topicals shouldn’t be used on broken skin, so avoid using a CBD foot cream on blisters or sores. It’s also a good idea to start with a small test patch to gauge your skin’s reaction before applying it all over your feet.

To do a patch test, apply a small amount of CBD cream to the inside of your wrist and wait 24 hours. Check for any signs of irritation, like itching, swelling, or redness.

While CBD is generally considered safe by the World Health Organization, it’s not unusual to experience some side effects, including:

  • fatigue
  • diarrhea
  • changes in appetite
  • changes in weight

It’s a good idea to speak with a doctor before trying CBD products, especially if you’re currently taking any medications. CBD may interact with some medications, particularly those with a grapefruit warning.

Avoid CBD if you’re currently pregnant or breastfeeding.

CBD isn’t a cure-all. While it may be useful for foot pain or inflammation, you should still see a doctor if:

  • your foot pain is ongoing and isn’t improving
  • you’re experiencing swelling
  • you have signs of an infection, like pus, blistering, or warmth

Additionally, if your foot pain is severe enough that you’re unable to put weight on it or walk, call your doctor or seek emergency care right away.

Does CBD foot cream work?

For many people, yes. CBD has anti-inflammatory benefits, which may help relieve aches and pains in the feet.

Is CBD cream good for plantar fasciitis?

It might. Pain in the heels or bottom of the feet is a common symptom of plantar fasciitis, and CBD may help reduce pain and inflammation.

However, more human research is needed before we can say for certain the CBD cream works for plantar fasciitis pain.

Is CBD cream better than CBD oil for foot pain?

Both products may help soothe aching feet. However, a CBD cream is designed for localized relief. If it contains ingredients designed to create a warming or cooling effect, you’ll start feeling effects very quickly.

A CBD oil taken sublingually, or under the tongue, also works quickly, but it’s not immediate. Plus, CBD oils are intended for whole-body effects.

Does CBD help with neuropathy in feet?

It might. There’s anecdotal evidence of CBD’s effectiveness for neuropathy. Additionally, a small 2020 study with 29 people found that topical CBD oil offered a dramatic improvement in pain and uncomfortable sensations.

Still, more studies are needed before CBD can be considered an effective treatment for neuropathy.

A good CBD lotion, cream, or salve may bring soothing relief to sore feet.

Look for a CBD product that’s made with high-quality CBD and is from a reputable company that’s transparent about hemp sourcing and cultivation practices.

Make sure that all products are third-party tested for safety and quality.

If you’re seeking a product for aching feet, ingredients, like menthol and essential oils, may offer additional relief.

Is CBD legal? The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the legal definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act. This made some hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC federally legal. However, CBD products containing more than 0.3% THC still fall under the legal definition of marijuana, making them federally illegal but legal under some state laws. Be sure to check state laws, especially when traveling. Also, keep in mind that the FDA has not approved nonprescription CBD products, and some products may be inaccurately labeled.
