You’ve probably heard the Casper name before. The company advertises on popular podcasts. They’re always doing fun and crazy stuff on their social media accounts and have formed partnerships with popular brands such as Uber in the past.

They were one of the early pioneers of the bed-in-a-box industry and really helped propel it to where it is today. Rumor is, they’ve hit $300 million in sales and are expecting to double again this year, which is pretty amazing.

So with that kind of growth, the mattress must be pretty darn good, right? Short answer — yes, but let’s discuss.

Before we get into what the mattress is actually made of, let’s talk about the all the extras Casper offers.

First, they offer free shipping and returns. The mattress will arrive at your door compressed in a medium-sized box in a matter of days.

From there, Casper offers a 100-night risk-free trial. That means if you don’t like the mattress after the first night or after the 99th night, just give the company a call.

They’ll refund your money and come pick up the mattress no questions asked — no need to try to fit the mattress back in the box and ship it back.

They take care of all the hard work. Plus, Casper is so confident you’ll like their product, they back their mattresses with a 10-year warranty.

The Casper mattress is comprised of four layers of foam. On the bottom is a 5-inch layer of durable support foam. This layer serves as the foundation of the bed and gives it some structure.

On top of the base layer is Casper’s new Zoned Support foam. This foam is new to the Casper mattress. It wasn’t included in previous generations. It was introduced in 2018. Basically, this layer of foam is split into thirds.

The portion under your head and shoulders is a bit softer to provide more pressure relief. Then the portion under your hips and lower back is a bit firmer to provide a little more support to keep your spine properly aligned. Then Casper once again uses the softer foam for the portion under your legs.

On top of the new Zoned Support foam is a 1.5-inch layer of memory foam. This gives the bed additional pressure relief and gives the bed a nice, soft foam feel.

Finally, on top is a 1.5-inch layer of open-cell foam. This is a proprietary foam that shares a few of characteristics with latex foam in that it’s supposed to provide a little bounce and help with cooling. Overall, the Casper mattress comes in at 10-inch thick with the cover.

These layers of foam are brought together by a soft, woven cover that can be removed if necessary.

However, like most mattress-in-a-box beds, Casper recommends that you do not machine wash it. Instead, it’s recommended that you just spot clean the cover with a mild detergent. This is how you clean most bed-in-a-box mattresses, so no big deal there.

It contains microscopic pores that are small enough where spills can’t get through but are still breathable enough to where air can flow freely.

The Casper mattress is extremely comfortable. It has that prototypical soft foam feel where when you first lie down on it, you can’t help but let out an audible “aaahhh.”

However, unlike a lot of other soft foam beds, the Casper mattress also provides a good amount of support. Overall, we give the Casper mattress a 4.75 to 5.75 out of 10 on our soft to firm scale (1 being pudding soft and 10 being rock hard).

Jeff and Matt thought it was just over a 5, but they weigh around 170 to 180 pounds. Someone who’s a little heavier might think it’s closer to a 4.75, while someone who’s lighter might think it’s closer to the range of 5.5 to 5.75.

Regardless, we think Casper has this thing figured out. Their mattress is soft and comfortable, yet it’s still pretty supportive. When you lie on the bed, the mattress conforms to your heavier body parts, yet you don’t get that sinking feeling.

With that said, we think the Casper mattress accommodates all sleeping positions — side, back, and stomach. If you’re lying on your back or stomach, you won’t get that stuck-in-the mud feeling at all, rather you’ll still feel as if you’re lying on top of the mattress rather than in it.

However, we’d say if you’re 250-plus pounds, there are probably better options out there in terms of support and durability. When you’re on your side, though, the mattress cradles your hips and shoulders and provides the necessary pressure relief. It’s pretty nice.

When it comes to temperature regulation, Casper performs like most other bed-in-a-box mattresses in that we didn’t really notice anything special. It’s not cool to the touch, and we didn’t sleep particularly cool.

Don’t get me wrong, though, we didn’t sleep hot either. It’s not like we woke up drenched in sweat or anything. We’d say it’s just temperature neutral, which is still a good thing at the end of the day.

Really, there’s only been a handful of mattresses that we’ve tested that are truly cool to the touch and are good with airflow and keeping you cool.

If your partner happens to move around a lot in their sleep (or vice versa), I think you’ll be happy with Casper’s lack of motion transfer.

In our can test, it performed extremely well. We placed a can at one end of the bed and started rolling/walking on the other end, and we barely noticed any cross-motion movement. The bed strikes a nice balance between providing a slight bounce yet isolating motion completely.

When it comes to responsiveness, the Casper mattress also performs pretty well here. Again, it’s not the fastest mattress we’ve tested as far as regaining its initial shape after releasing pressure or getting up off the bed, but it’s still decently quick.

That open-cell top layer definitely adds a little bounce as opposed to just having traditional memory foam on top that can sometimes take an extra second or two to regain its form.

Bottom line: All this means is that you’ll find it easy to switch between sleeping positions. Sometimes with mattresses that respond slowly, you’ll find that it requires extra effort to switch from your back to your stomach or vice versa, which can make you more restless throughout the night.

This is one area where the Casper mattress is just average. Edge support is an important topic for couples who share a smaller-sized bed (i.e. full or queen) because often you’ll find yourself curled up near the edge when your partner is hogging the middle of the bed.

As such, it’s important that the edges provide the necessary support and structure to where you don’t feel like you’re going to fall off.

When you sit or lie near the edge of the Casper, you do sink down a tiny bit and get a sense of that roll-off sensation, but it’s not as bad as other bed-in-a-box mattresses we’ve tested.

It’s an all-foam bed at the end day that’s not particularly thick, so I can’t say I’m surprised. If you’re a couple who falls into the category I described above, there are better options out there in terms of edge support, but this will definitely get the job done.

I think you get it by now: Casper is one of the big dogs in the mattress-in-a-box industry for a reason. They have this thing pretty well figured out. We like their mattresses.

It’s not our absolute favorite mattress out there, but it’s definitely in the top- five discussion. It’s super comfortable, and it strikes a very nice balance between being soft and supportive.

It’s not great at any one thing; it’s just solid at everything — comfort, support, coolness, motion transfer, etc. Basically, if you want to play it safe and go with a solid mattress, Casper is a great choice.
