Brentwood Oceano mattress overview

As you probably know, these beds ship in a box. Once it arrives, you’ll have to unbox and unwrap the mattress.

The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress

Brentwood’s Oceano mattress is an eco-friendly hybrid bed that will accommodate all types of sleepers.

The mattress is a whopping 14.5 inches thick and is made with individually wrapped coils on the bottom, Air Luxe foam and microcoils in the middle, and gel memory foam on top.

It also has a soft, nonremovable cover made of plant-based Tencel fibers and New Zealand wool.

Softer feel with Brentwood Oceano

The Oceano has a softer overall feel than the Avocado. With that said, it still offers plenty of support and has more pressure relief since its top layer is memory foam.

It’s an accommodating bed that will be good for all types of sleepers (back, stomach, side, and combo), while the Avocado mattress is catering more specifically to back and stomach sleepers.

The Oceano is soft, but not too soft, and firm, but not too firm.

All of this is to say, if you want a bed with medium firmness, Oceano is the way to go.

It’s about a 4.75 to 5.25 on the soft-to-firm scale for a moderate-sized person, though it will feel softer for people with higher body weight and firmer for people with lower body weight.

Oceano mattress motion transfer

Considering the Oceano mattress includes coils, it does a surprisingly good job of deadening the transfer of motion. We were able to really jump on the mattress without disturbing the bottle of iced tea a few feet away.

For someone who’s a light sleeper with a partner who moves around a lot, this can be the difference between a good or bad night’s sleep.

Avocado, on the other hand, tends to transfer motion a bit more, but it’s still better than your traditional innerspring bed.

Brentwood Oceano has less bounce

The Oceano has just a little bit of that bounce that comes with an innerspring bed, but less bounce than the Avocado.

Brentwood’s layer of gel memory foam gives it a nice softness without an overwhelming memory foam feel. And just in general, neither mattress has that “stuck in the mud” feeling you’ve probably experienced with other beds.

Avocado mattresses are good for:

  • anyone who wants a natural/organic mattress
  • stomach and back sleepers
  • people who want a firm, responsive mattress

  • free shipping and returns
  • 365-night trial period
  • 25-year warranty

Avocado mattress overview

Avocado is also a hybrid mattress made with organic and natural materials. It’s constructed with fabric-encased innerspring coils and all-natural latex foam (in contrast to memory foam with Brentwood).

For some extra cushion, you can purchase an additional topper, which adds 2 more inches of that latex foam. That not only gives a softer feel, but also some extra thickness for people with higher body weight.

Avocado tends to be a little more affordable

Both of these mattresses are fairly expensive by bed-in-a-box standards, and their prices are actually pretty similar. But with the Avocado, you have the option of saving some money by opting out of getting the topper.

Here’s a breakdown of the pricing for their most popular mattresses:

Mattress sizeOceano Luxury HybridAvocado Green
Split King$2,398N/A
California King$1,999$1,799
Twin XL$1,199$999

Prices valid as of September 22, 2020.

Also, you can get a discount on an Avocado mattress at checkout. In general, you can expect that Brentwood will be $100 to $200 more expensive than Avocado (with the topper), but you can check out Brentwood’s website for current promotions.

Avocado mattress responsiveness

The coils, combined with latex foam, in this bed give it great responsiveness. It bounces right back to keep you from feeling stuck when you switch positions at night.

The Brentwood has good responsiveness, too, but the Avocado is immediate. The coils also give it a bit more of that innerspring bounce that some people may prefer.

Avocado’s bed is firmer

The Avocado mattress is a firmer bed than the Brentwood Oceano, so it’s going to be preferable for people who sleep on their back or stomach.

It’s hard to say outright that Avocado wins here, because Brentwood is so accommodating. But overall, Avocado is the firmer bed.

Avocado aesthetic and smell

The cover on this mattress is made with organic cotton and New Zealand wool. It’s very soft and looks great.

While both the Brentwood and the Avocado are made with natural materials, the Avocado actually looks earthy. It even smells quite nice, with none of that plastic-y, new-mattress smell. It really does smell like the outside of an avocado or a farmers market.

Avocado Green mattress coolness

The Avocado has the edge when it comes to keeping you cool, even though the Brentwood mattress doesn’t sleep hot.

The coils on both beds allow for good airflow, but the latex foam on Avocado tends to be a cooler material than something like memory foam.

So, if you tend to get overly warm during the night, the Avocado bed is the better option.
