There are two types of condoms that are classified as “long lasting.”
Extended pleasure condoms
This first type, known as extended pleasure condoms, is made out of a thicker material than traditional rubbers.
“The thicker material condoms are basically the opposite of the ‘feel like nothing is there’ condoms,” explains Zachary Zane, sex expert for P.S. Condoms. “By reducing the sensitization, they increase how long it takes to orgasm.”
Delay condoms
“Delay condoms are lined internally with some form of desensitizing agent, like benzocaine or lidocaine,” adds Zane. “These ingredients work as a local anesthetic and slightly numb the head of the penis, so it’s less sensitive, prolonging ejaculation.”

Put your metaphorical and literal stopwatch away! There’s no set amount of time that sex needs to last to be pleasurable.

The answer, however, depends on how you define sex.
Sex is any meaningful act of pleasure, says psychotherapist and sex and relationship expert Rachel Wright, LMFT. Meaning, that anything — be it a hand job, cunnilingus, rimming, grinding, or co-showering — can qualify as sex.
Given how varied all these sex acts are, it makes sense that there’s no set time for sex to last. Right?

How long sex lasts will depend on several factors, including:
- what you qualify as sex
- how recently you last had sex
- what other sexual activities came before “the sex”
- your current stress and hydration levels
- your recent mental health, nutrient intake, physical activity, and relational happiness
No! There shouldn’t be any loss of sensitivity for the person being penetrated. That’s because the desensitizing agent lines the inside (not the outside!) of the condom.
“If the receiver has any discomfort, they should stop immediately,” says Kaminetsky.
While some partners may notice a slight difference between “barely there” condoms and longer-lasting condoms, the sex sesh shouldn’t be less pleasurable.
“No,” says Kaminetsky. “The numbing agents used in these products have been around for years and are generally well-tolerated by most people.”
If you typically have sensitive skin, take the time to test the agent before partnered play.
To do this, turn the condom inside out and rub the agent along the inside of your wrist or elbow. Cover the area with a bandaid for 10 to 30 minutes. Then, remove the bandage and check for any signs of irritation.

If you’re planning to use a condom anyway, opting for a longer-lasting condom is the easiest choice. After all, it’s easier to slide on a condom than it is to spray or wipe your peen, wait a few minutes, and then roll on a rubber.
However, sprays and wipes have their upsides, too. These products may be a better option for sex acts where a condom might get in the way. Think: hand sex, sex with a dildo or other toys, masturbating, and the like.
Plus, sprays and wipes don’t put a physical barrier between you and your partner(s) — a bonus for anyone who hasn’t already been using condoms.
As for deciding between wipes or sprays? It all comes down to personal preference.
