Go Green Get Lean

It is not often that I highly recommend books on my blog, but once again I have come across a book that I truly think is remarkable. So please excuse me while I gush for the next few minutes. This book is hot off the presses and titled, Go Green Get Lean by Kate Geagan, MS, RD. Of course I always take notice when a Registered Dietitian writes a book, and I had heard about this one last fall and went onto Amazon.com and pre-ordered it. So I really was one of the first to get it on my doorstep this week. The tagline of the book is "Trim your waistline with the ultimate low-carbon footprint diet." Save your life by losing weight while also saving the planet? Jackpot!

I love this book because it is such as easy read with her personal stories, starting with her "PB&J moment" when she realized that she just had to write this book. Many diet books and environmental activists can be "preachy," but this book is anything but that. She realized that the American diet is warming the planet and that Americans' food choices are a significant driver of the global warming crisis. She makes a compelling case for the fact that your food choices not only affect your current and future health, but also the overall carbon footprint that will affect future generations.

Another thing I love is that she is realistic in food choices and as she says, "you do not need to subsist on reconstituted gruel and local twigs in order to trim the amount of fossil fuel on your plate." The entire eating plan she has developed is full of tasty pleasures that are good for you and the planet.

I could go on and on, but just know that this book will tell you everything you need to know about how to be in the "green plate club." And as she says at the end of her intro, "I think our children would be proud of us." A few simple changes in your lifestyle can make a huge impact on your waist and waste in this planet.
