The Motor City has faced its fair share of economic challenges that may affect access to affordable care. The Detroit metropolitan area is fortunate to have three large healthcare systems delivering care. Henry Ford Hospital Health System includes the Henry Ford Hospital, which is known for its Level 1 Trauma Center. The healthcare system is considered the 5th largest employer in Michigan with over 1,200 physicians providing care in over 100 locations. Detroit Medical Center (DMC) is another healthcare system with a presence throughout Michigan. The healthcare system started with Children’s Hospital Michigan, DMC Harper Hospital, and DMC Heart Hospital. Cancer Centers include Karmanos Cancer Center in midtown, which is known for its comprehensive care and has received a National Cancer Institute designation. For the underinsured and uninsured population, Detroit has the HUDA Health Clinic, SAY Detroit Family Health Clinic, and FernCare Free Clinic. Medical schools include Wayne State University, Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.
