not usually one to plug products. But every once in a while, something

comes along that is too fabulous to keep to yourself. This time, Kathy

Moskal, president of Vere Goods, wrote to me about her product after reading of

my diabetes/gluten-related chocolate

laments. She was kind enough to send me some samples, and I must say, I

feel like I've found Healthy Dark Chocolate Nirvana.

is a chocolate product that's a natural alternative to sugar free -- containing

absolutely no chemicals -- but sweetened with just a pinch of crystalline

fructose, which is low glycemic and doesn't spike your blood sugar! They also

add inulin, a pro-biotic derived from chicory to support the immune

system. And they use organic nuts and hormone-free dairy. Kathy likes to

say their chocolate is "as different from other chocolate as an Heirloom

Tomato is from Ketchup."

damn good. And it is, too. I am happy to report that I have finally found

a truly good goodie that I can enjoy without guilt, and without (too much)

dosing stress. Here's my scorecard:

Coconut, walnut, and peanut butter brownies - small and OMG scrumptious!

75% chocolate squares - rich and dark, but a little bit tasteless (they give

you the sensation of eating very rich chocolate, but without the kick...)

Cacao nib wafers - ditto to above

Spicy pepito wafers and espresso wafers - OMG good, as in "get your hands

off my special chocolate!"

Chocolate almond clusters - crunchy and scrumptious. That little bit of dark

choc coating is all you need here.

amazing thing is that Vere's goodies have more than

twice the anti-oxidants of the standard dark chocolate. And they've also developed a

"super-chocolate bar" to be released this coming summer that actually

lowers your overall cholesterol by 10%. That one I've got to see!

Kathy writes: "I've worked and researched this for 2 ½ years ....and my hope is to not only offer something wonderful for diabetics...but to change how people think of sweets look for flavor over sugar...and quality and satisfaction over quantity."
