Preterm Labor and Delivery

Reviewer Info: Alison Stuebe, Department of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA., Healthline Pregnancy Guide, February 2006

When a woman is treated for preterm labor (with steroids, tocolytic medications, and possibly bedrest or antibiotics), the goal is to delay delivery as long as possible. Many women who experience preterm labor go on to deliver around their due date. For more information, go to Term Delivery.

However, when labor cannot be stopped-or if a medical condition makes continuing the pregnancy too risky-you need to prepare for a preterm delivery. For information about medical conditions that make delivery necessary, go to Risks of Early Labor For information about preterm delivery, go to Preterm Delivery.
