Urinary Tract Infections

Reviewer Info: Dominic Marchiano, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA. , Healthline Pregnancy Guide, February 2006

Bacterial infections of the urinary tract are the most common infection among pregnant women. Approximately 5 to 10 percent of women develop urinary tract infections (UTIs) at some time during their pregnancies. And, pregnant women who develop UTIs are three to four times more likely to progress to serious illness, including pyelonephritis (kidney infection) and other complications.

For information on the types of UTIs associated with pregnancy, go to Infections in Pregnancy: Asymptomatic Bacteriuria, Infections in Pregnancy: Acute Urethritis, Infections in Pregnancy: Acute Cystitis, and Infections in Pregnancy: Acute Pyelonephritis.
