Sometimes a diseased or damaged knee joint is replaced with an artificial joint. Most replacement knee joints include a metal femoral or thighbone component and a plastic and metal tibial or shinbone component. The damaged portion of the kneecap or patella may be replaced by a mushroom shaped prosthesis. The resectioned patella and prosthesis are attached to the other components.
