The nose is lined with moist mucous membrane. Breathing in dry air - especially indoor heat in the winter--can dry out and irritate the membranes. Dried out mucus and membranes, and the nose-picking that often accompanies it, are the most common causes of nose bleeds. . There are many blood vessels in and around the nose. They are close to the surface and help to warm and humidify the air you breathe in. Their location makes them easy to injure. A nose bleed occurs when one of these blood vessels ruptures. Most nose bleeds occur from the rupture of blood vessels in the front part of the nose.
