The large bowel, or colon, absorbs water from the solid waste left over after food digestion. Once water has been removed, the solid waste or fecal matter that is formed is expelled from the body. In irritable bowel syndrome or IBS, the smooth movement of fecal matter through the colon is disrupted. This can result in diarrhea, constipation, or alternating bouts of both.
