In total hip replacement surgery, the head of the femur, or thighbone is removed, and the femur is prepared for placement of the femoral stem. A metal ball attached to the end of the stem fits into an artificial socket, which has already been placed in the acetabulum, the cup-shaped hollow in the hipbone Together these components replace the normal ball and socket joint.
