The tibia or shinbone joins the knee to the ankle. In total knee replacement surgery, the lower part of the implant consists of a flat, metal tray with a stem, which is implanted into the tibial bone. A polyethylene insert is clipped into the tibial tray and serves as the weight-bearing portion of the implant.
