Food is broken down during digestion by a combination of caustic hydrochloric acid and an enzyme called pepsin. The stomach and small intestine are protected from these chemicals by special cells that secrete mucous. A peptic ulcer occurs if this protective mechanism fails for some reason, and these chemicals damage the stomach and small intestine.
