Hip Dysplasia - Pediatric Transcript

« back to video

The normal hip joint is formed by a ball at the top of the thighbone, which fits into a socket in the hip bone. When checking your baby's legs and hips, your healthcare provider may find that the thigh bone does not fit securely into the hip socket. Loose or stretched ligaments at the hip joint can affect the normal development of the hip socket. A child with this problem - known as developmental dysplasia of the hip--may need to see a specialist. The hip joint will need to be put back into the socket, and your child may need to wear a brace or cast. Surgery is rarely needed.
