After access to the damaged joint, knee replacement surgery begins with removal of damaged cartilage and bone and shaping the lower end of the thighbone, also called the distal femur. Shaping the distal femoral bone insures that your leg maintains proper alignment with the new joint and prepares it for attachment of a new, metal joint component.
