Narrowing of the carotid arteries, which are in your neck and supply blood to the head and neck, may be treated with angioplasty. A thin, flexible tube called a balloon catheter is inserted into the narrowed or blocked artery. A balloon at the tip of the catheter is inflated which stretches the narrowed artery. The balloon is deflated and withdrawn with the catheter. Sometimes a metal device called a stent is left in the artery to help keep the artery from narrowing again.
