Vision in older adults may be impaired by age-related macular degeneration, or AMD. This painless disease damages the macula, which is in the center of the retina, in the back part of the eye. The macula helps you see fine details in the center of your vision. AMD takes two forms: wet and dry. Both result in a blind spot around the center of vision that makes it difficult to read, drive, and recognize faces.
