Q: I just found out I'm pregnant. Should I drink only bottled water?
A: Though there are a number of beverages you're wise to avoid during pregnancy (like alcohol and anything unpasteurized), municipal tap water is not on the list, says Gary Goldman, M.D., an obstetrician in New York City. The government regulates both tap and bottled water, and each time the Environmental Protection Agency establishes a standard for tap water, the FDA usually follows suit for bottled. The result? The two are equally safe. (Private well water should be tested.) But unlike most public supplies, bottled water doesn't always contain fluoride, which may help protect your baby's developing teeth from cavities after she's born.
