Q: I've heard that topical arnica is good for muscle strain. Is that true?

A: The jury is out. There are very few published studies on arnica's effect on muscle pain. Still, the remedy has many fans, including Tracy Ohrman, the head trainer for the New York Power women's pro soccer team. Because it has so few downsides, I do think it's worth a shot. You can apply the cream or gel to the injured area four times a day for as long as directed. If your pain doesn't start to subside, consult your doctor.
