Q: I'm skeeved by the thought of using headphones at music stores. Can I catch anything?

A: You can pick up germs from any contaminated surface. A few studies of some airlines' practice of reusing headsets show an increase in the number of certain common bacteria, but infection has rarely been reported. To be safe, carry premoistened alcohol towelettes, which can disinfect most surfaces in a swipe. The best way to avoid run-ins with the most frequently spread cold-causing bugs is to scrub after handling community property. Not near a sink? Keep your unwashed hands away from your nose and mouth to reduce the odds of taking home any unwanted guests.
