A Kinder, Gentler Cigarette?

Who are they kidding?

Quest cigarettes, a new line of low-nicotine smokes, aren't marketed as a way to kick the habit. But manufacturers do claim the brand, which is available in three strengths, can help smokers cut back on nicotine. Cessation experts give us their take: "There's no such thing as a safe cigarette," says Lyndon Haviland, Dr.P.H., of the American Legacy Foundation, a public health group in Washington, D.C. " Just because nicotine levels are lower doesn't mean there aren't serious health risks. Most of the lung damage from smoking comes from tar, carcinogens and carbon monoxide—which are found in all cigarettes." Still, the smokes may have one benefit over other light brands: Smokers don't tend to compensate by inhaling more deeply or smoking more, says Duke University Medical Center nicotine researcher Jed Rose, Ph.D. And the manufacturer does plan to eventually seek FDA approval to label Quest as a cessation aid once more research is completed. The truth is, you're still smoking . If you're ready to quit, you have healthier options. For help, visit www.quitnet.com.
