What is the most important information I should know about entacapone?

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Entacapone may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities.

Dizziness may be more likely to occur when rising from a sitting or lying position. To avoid falls, rise slowly from a sitting or lying position.

Hallucinations may occur with entacapone. Call your doctor if you experience hallucinations.

What is entacapone?

When used with levodopa and carbidopa, entacapone increases levels of levodopa (Dopar, Larodopa, Sinemet) in the body.

Entacapone is used with carbidopa and levodopa to treat patients with Parkinson's disease who experience the signs and symptoms of end-of-dose "wearing-off". Entacapone is used only in combination with carbidopa and levodopa. It has no effect if it is used on its own.

Entacapone may also be used for purposes other than those listed in the medication guide.

Entacapone should always be taken with levodopa/carbidopa. Entacapone has no antiparkinsonian effect of its own.

Take entacapone with a full glass of water.

You can take entacapone with or without food.

Do not stop taking entacapone suddenly. You may require a gradual dosage reduction to prevent withdrawal effects. Store entacapone at room temperature in a tight container away from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.
