Yoga Stress Busters Twist in a Chair LifeStyle WebTV.com Twist in a Chair. Bea Broda: We’ve all heard about the calming effects of yoga but it’s also really terrific for flexibility and so really the health of all our systems. Here to tell us more about certain pauses that can be beneficial and actually very portable for us is Sheila Miller and she’s with the Sound of Body Yoga Studio here at Toronto. Sheila you’re telling me earlier that this many exercises that we can do no matter where we are? Sheila Miller: Yeah this poses in the chair as of course your practical when you’re in a waiting room even in an airplane potentially to have a little leg room and so this one have your feet on the floor and will sit up nice and tall. So the twist are great for posture, great for digestion actually and breathing and balancing since we’ve got the two sides. You do have back concerns you need to check with you doctor and be low cautious there. Now for us we’re going to keep our hips pointing straight ahead same direction as our knees and our toes and from there turn to one side bring one had to cross and rest on the thigh or over the thigh if you have longer arms, the other hand can be beside the chair or if the chair back is just the right height and you’re flexible enough you can rest the arm on the chair back. But you see what’s comfortable for you, you may find you need to do a little less after all. So nice shoulder blade squeeze. The back shoulder blade squeezes in towards your spine. Turn your head very comfortably but really it’s the back that’s twisting the neck is following along gently. Take some long deep breathes here the inhalations making you taller exhalations helping you to relax but not at all slouching. So use the breath to keep your tension with your body to keep the stretch dynamic. We don’t want to hear hardness or sharpness so always stretch that feels elastic and enjoyable. You can use an inhalation to untwist pause a moment and see how you feel and then you can do the other side of course. Bea: So that’s for the twist. Sheila: The twist on the chair. Bea: It’s actually perfect I can imagine doing that in an airplane and arriving four more. Sheila: Good. Bea: So there we are we can establish some calm and also some flexibility with our yoga poses.
