Speaker: Umbra, this is kind of a personal question but which plastics are safe? Should I be concerned? Umbra: I think 2 words: Less plastic. Plastic is made with oil, it can be toxic and it doesn't biodegrade. As far as safety goes, here is what you need to know. Anything with Bisphenol A, stay away. BPA can be found in baby bottles, sippy cups, can foods, food containers, Tupperware, oh so many things. So, stay away from number 7. Avoid PVC number 3 too. No Vinyl, that's final. If you keep some plastic around, make it number 2, 4 or 5. The numbers are on the bottom, people. Don't be spastic. For more on plastic, go to grist.org.
