What Women Should Eat During Pregnancy Hi, I am Edward Szmuc, M.D., OB/GYN. I am the Chairman here at Banner Desert Medical Center of the Department of OB/GYN. We see patients throughout the community of the East Valley in the Phoenix metro area, specifically Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert and Queen Creek for the most part. Pregnancy is a time where, first off, you shouldn’t try to lose weight. You want to basically eat healthy and that includes fruits and vegetables with almost every meal. You want to try to eat lean meats and fish if you like fish, about three times a week. You want the fish to be cooked; you don’t want to be eating raw fish or raw meat. Sushi is out. A few other things that I like to tell my patients is the things not to eat and that would include the fancy chesses. The fancy cheeses including gorgonzola, feta, brie, blue cheese; they're in the fancy area of the food stores. You don’t want to eat those. They are a risk for infections. You can eat the regular chesses, American, Swiss, jack, cheddar, that’s all fine. You want to--if you eat daily meat, you want to heat it up. You want to cook hotdogs; you don’t want to eat those raw. In addition, you want to avoid alcohol. There’s no safe minimal amount of alcohol in pregnancy. Finally, two caffeine drinks a day would be okay.
