What to Expect from an Infant's Physical Exam This is our 18-month old Erika. This is her father Rick. My nurse and I will do a physical initial weighting. First, we’ll get her weight. This is again as we talked about will be plotted on a growth curve. We’re now going to get the length and the kid is younger than two years of age, we like to measure the area head to calf. So it’s very important if you follow serial head measurements. The chest auscultation, abdominal exam all done in the usual manner—your exam looking for the alignment of the legs which are beautifully aligned. You notice the knees are together and it comes together with the ankles. There is really no, what we call genu valgum or genu varum which is knock kneed and bowlegged type phenomenon as they’re starting here. We checked her hips, leg alignment again. We feel for lymph nodes. And now we look in her ears. We do an examination of the pharynx. And now we try to get her to look at this light and detract. This kid looks an eye gear of symmetrical eye movement. And then, we do a fundoscopy exam which really is a matter of checking red reflex looking at the cornea and also looking at the lid. We get a—glands at the back in the eye under this circumstance. I'm looking at her stand. Again, I'm looking at her general physical appearance. And now we put her down for the complete—. What she's getting today is the DPT. She had never had a reaction before with the old—. Maybe we have a reaction to the child right. The immunization is given in the lateral thigh because of the safety in that location. The next shot can be given subcutaneous. We’re going to have her stood up and we’re going to give at the back her arm. And then we’re going to let dad come to the rescue here. And save the day for us. And the baby is all dads as he can save her from our physical exam here.
