Speaker: What is protein and how much should I eat in a day? Jeannette Bessinger: Protein is one of the three main macro nutrients which are the components that make up your food. It's made up of 21 different components called immuno acids and different changes of immunos form different types of proteins. In your body protein is largely responsible for cell growth and repair particularly of muscle fibers. The standard allotment of protein is .8 grams per kilogram of body weight. And a kilogram is 2.2 pounds per gram so for instance a 125 pound woman would need about 45 grams of carbohydrate a day and 180 pound man would need about 65 grams a day.
