Trilogy with RapidArc Radiation Therapy Hi, I am Dr. Robert Wollman. I am the Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. Here we take care of patients who have cancer from all over the Los Angeles area and quite a few people from out of the city and out of the state. Trilogy RapidArc technology is the newest piece of equipment and addition to our armamentarium in fighting cancer. Trilogy and RapidArc allow us to deliver radiation more precisely and more rapidly than we have ever been able to do before and precision and rapidity or speed are extremely important in terms of getting good outcomes, which means giving a lot of radiation to the tumor and very little radiation to healthy normal tissue. Speed is important for comfort. Patients are lying on a table and they are generally exposed whatever part of the body that we need to treat. So it’s sort of an invasive uncomfortable situation for them and the more you can minimize, that the more comfortable they am, but speed is also important in terms of accuracy too because the longer a patient lays on the radiation table, the greater chance there is that they could move or flinch or deep breathe or in some other way move their bodies enough that the target may go out of the field and normal tissue may go in the field. So speed is extremely important and precision and rapidity are very important in terms of making sure you do exactly the same thing from day-to-day exactly the same way.
